I just got a 98 300 4x4 that seems to be in great shape. It recently started a ticking noise. It seems like it goes away when the engine gets warmed up. Or maybe I notice it less. When you first start it up on a cold motor is sounds like a ping or a tick. It's hard to describe. It pulls strong and doesn't smoke at all on start up or when under throttle. Could it just need a valve adjustment or a cam chain? Is there a easy way to tell. I have a little mechanical experience but not a lot with quads. Thanks for any help

adjust your valves..they need it..if that don't solve your problem..your timming chain is stretched.

Thanks for the info. I listened to it last night and it sounds like it's coming from the upper part of the engine. So hopefully it's just a valve adjustment. Is it hard taking the gas tank off to do the valve adjustemnt? I found a thread on here showing me how to do the valve adjustment but nothing on the gas tank remvoval. Thanks for the help

Yeah, you'll need to remove the gas tank. Shut the cut off valve off. Unhook the fuel line from the cut off valve and remove the seat. The gas tank only has one bolt at the rear of the tank to hold it on. Remove the bolt and slide the gas tank rearward and lift it off.

Thanks for the info Helmut. One last thing would you mind telling me how I know i;m top dead center on the compression stroke. I think I know about aligning the t mark I just don't know how to tell if i'm on the compression stroke or not. Thank You

When the "T" mark is lined up, if you're on the compression stroke, you should be able to wiggle the rocker arms a little. The only exception to this, is if both valves are already adjusted too tight, but if you're adjusting them because of excessive noise, this shouldn't be the case.

You can also remove the sparkplug and put your finger over the hole and turn the engine. When you feel compression building up, stop on the "T" mark.

helmut i'm doing it right now I heard air trying to escape out the hole my finger was covering does that mean in on the compression stroke? Thanks
Yes. Line the "T" mark up and when you get the valve caps off, try to wiggle the rocker arms to verify.

i'm wiggling them and it sounds like a ting when i go back and forth
If you can wiggle them and the "T" mark is lined up, you are on the compression stroke at TDC and are ready to adjust them.

Not sure what you mean about the ting, unless you're saying they're real loose and making a noise by wiggling them.
