I have been snooping around looking for similar threads, but ended up right here to post.
Valve adjustment didn't help quiet the motor top end. When I lug the motor, its quiet. I tried retracting the lifter/tensioner with a long skinny screwdriver, but it seems to start resisting, then goes free and spins round and round. I suspect the tensioner spring is broken. I cant quite get the tensioner removed. Looks like I have to remove the cylinder first. I have the service manual, but I'm still unsure. Can I remove the cylinder and head as a single assembly without separating the two? I don't have the time right now to test my mechanical (dis) ability and would like any advice I can get to get my machine back on the trail. Sounds like it might tear itself up if I don't fix it.
