My oldest sons fourtrax rearend finally gave out. It`s a `96 2x4 fourtrax 300 and was full of metal chunks where it ate itself. I found a new Caltric unit on ebay. We replaced it today and the wheels spin in the reverse direction than they should. If we shift it in reverse it goes forward. !st gear and up & it goes backward. Am I nuts? How is this possible? Could they have pressed the pinion gear on wrong and put the ring gear in backwards? The unit is brand new. I can`t take it apart to check it out in fear it will void any warantee. Maybe I`m losing my mind.

We made the same swap last year with my youngest sons fourtrax with no problems. The one we did last year was also a new Caltric unit but it`s a 1998 2x4.

No chance its a 350 rancher differential. you would see the stud holes sticking out on the left hand side.

theres no way you would install it without knowing it was wrong.

Sounds to me like they got the wrong direction for the pinion and ring gear set.

That's what happens with Chinese parts!

Thank you. I agree....this is on me for buying this stuff. I prefer original equipment but my budget is limited. Do you (or anyone) know who sells OEM units online? I appreciate your time.

I have one in the shop tore down getting ready to be rebuilt. OEM unit, Im hoping to get to it this week. You might check ebay and see if a good used one is for sale or rebuilt.

I would just return the caltric part and wait for a good used OEM unit if it were me.
