i replaced the cdi box and the coil. New plug and checked all the fuses and connections. i took the handle bar switch apart to see if i was getting connections in there and i flip the kill switch on and off and pushed the starter button i would get a spark for just a sec and then nothing. I bypassed the switch and still nothing. That's the only time i can get a small spark

bad/wrong c.d.i. . if I am understanding you right ?, it sparks just one time at the spark plug when you release the start button ?, if this is the case ?, then your c.d.i. is bad. oem from honda ?, ebay ?, amazon ?. buy the correct c.d.i. from honda !. I know for a fact, all 1996 model trx300fw's came from the factory with a defective c.d.i. !.
