I just purchased a carb rebuild kit for my 91 Fourtrax TRX 300 FW and the manual outlines the use of a float level gauge. Is it really necessary to purchase this gauge and measure it. I found the gauge on Ebay for $50, but it seems spendy as the rebuild kit was $20 and I could buy a new carb for$150.

I've never had to use one. I just guess at the float level and if it's not right, I take it back off and do it again until I get it right. I've had a lot of experience, so I usually get it right the first time, anymore. You can take a clear hose and put it on the drain hose on the carb and hold it up beside the carb. Now, loosen the drain screw. The gas will flow through the hose up to the fuel level in the bowl. This will show you the fuel level in your bowl. The carb needs to be installed when you do this, so the carb will be sitting at the correct level.

I'm confused. The manual states, "The float cannot be adjusted", the measurement is to see if the float level if out specifications (18.5mm). If its out of spec, the manual states to replace the float assembly. I'm thinking I can probaly just skip this step.

Some floats have a little metal tab that you can bend to adjust them and some don't.

I believe he's working on a Fourtrax 300 4X4, but they aren't adjustable either.
