90 fourtrax 300 starter solenoid

New member of this site. Just picked up a fourtrax. Didn't have a battery so got one and went to hook it up. The starter solenoid won't operate off the battery when hooked up but will operate off the stator when motor is running. How does the solenoid get power from the battery?

welcome to the forums. the battery has two large cables, one goes from the pos terminal from battery to the starter solenoid, the other, ground cable goes from battery to the engine/frame. back at the starter solenoid, the other terminal on the other side of it, leads to the starters post.
