Hello,
I recently became an owner of a rebuilt 88 trx250x fourtrax. Starts easy with a kick or two but does not idle very long. It will also bog down and die after a few minites of riding.
I'm wondering if I have a carb issue and if anyone could give advise on what I should look at first in diagnosing the problem.
Also the previous owner didn't mention any problem like this but did say I might want to install a fuel shut off valve as it does not have one.
Is not having a fuel shut off valve installed causing this issue? Thanks for any help or suggestions.

No the shutoff won't cause that. You need to take the carb. apart and clean it real good. Take all the jets out and with a wire from a wire brush clean all the little holes in the jets. Take compressed air and blow out all the passages in the carb. body. Clean the tank out to make sure there is no rust and scale in it. check all your gas lines to be sure they are in good shape. Make sure the air filter is clean and you should be good to go.

Welcome to the forums. You might also want to invest in a good air filter Uni or K&N. but cleaning the carb is a good place to start. was the engine modified wen it was rebuilt or was it put back to stock condition? you may have some fuel delivery issues.eg.too small of a main and slow jet.

is it safe to blow u jets and main out by mouth
Well??? I would think that blowing your jets out by mouth would produce more moisture than compressed air due to more hot air which we all know your full of little buddy. So I would say no; it's not safe for that reason and the second reason is when you inhale deep to blow the jet you run the risk of sucking it down your throat then you would be out of a jet. LOL

Wow, thanks for the quick help. I'll see what I can find out. Glad I found this forum. I didnt think about the air filter I'll start there and then move to the carb. Might be back with more questions but I think I'll stay away from blowing anything out myself. lol:icon_ rocker:

Well it turns out there is no air filter and I'm missing the lid to the air filter box. Ive just noticed theres some clips on the top of the air filter box for a lid, but no lid or filter. :eek:hmy: Will this be affecting the performace and can it create any more problems and also anybody know where can i get one from or should I fabricate something up??
I've only had this 4-wheeler for about a month and got it for practically nothing. I'd definitley like to get some use out of it, everything else seems to be in decent shape. Thanks for the help. Cheers

Yeah, you need some type of air filter before your engine is destroyed by mud and dirt. No filter is going to let too much air into the engine, unless it has been jetted without the filter. Either way, you need to get some kind of filter on it before it destroys your engine.
