Hi, I am new to the site and I was looking for help. I have a 250 trx fourtrax and it is hard to start I have rebuilt the carb and still not starting with out starting fluid. When the engine is cold it sounds like it is turing over fast and I hear a loud knock when the engine turns over. If I spray the carb with starting fluid it will start but stalls out until it warms up and then it will run fine most of the time. Any ideas

Did you install a different sized jet? it sounds like either your choke is not working or your over fueling.

Just be sure they gave you the right kit. Wouldn't be the first time they screwed something up. I asked for an oil filter for a foreman 500, and I got one for a Rubicon. Not exactly the same size.

Now you know that the dealers NEVER give out the wrong parts you surely must have said Rubicon...lol

Need to stay away from the starting fluid not good on the motor, check your valve clearance, if they are worn they have less clearance and can cause a hard to start problem.

Thanks for your reply I think I am going to get a carb rebuild kit off ebay they have them for around 15 bucks. I hope that will fix the problem and it takes alot of starting fluid to get it going. So thats not a good idea I take it? I had the honda dealer tell me the rings and piston are bad and thats why its not starting and the carb kit he gave me was the correct one but I am not sure. The dealer wants to rebuild the motor but if its not getting gas it won't start. The dealer had me take the carb to him and he said he hot tanked the carb and it still doesn't start with out starting fluid.

Run a compression check bro that will tell you if you need a rebuild.

Thanks again for your reply. I have never check compression but I don't think it will be that bad any idea what the compression should be? I have a repair manual I purchased off the dealer when I was doing the carb will it be in that? One question I have is if the compression was bad would it run when I got it started? Like I said after about 5 min of starting with starting fluid over and over it will finally run until I turn off then if I try to start it after sitting for lets say 5 min it will not start until I turn the gas off and turn the motor over a few times and then hit it with starting fluid and turn the gas on and I am usaully good to go.

Still not running

Hi, and thanks for all the help. I am not sure if this will help or not but I could not find a compression tester but I went out and tried to start my atv and the battery is dead and I kicked the snot out of it and nothing. I found a can of carb cleaner sprayed it in carb thru the airbox and it fired up and then died becasue of no fuel. I am looking at getting the carb rebuild kit off ebay. I was wondering if since it was hard to kick over is the compression good or not? Thanks again for all the help.

hi

Hello all. I am also new to the forum and atv's! I am having similar troubles as mobo. I have an '87 fourtrax. Im guessing its the utility. A friend gave it to me 2 weeks ago. He said it was running just a few weeks before he gave it to me. As far as i know, the green neutral light on the controls doesnt work. It hasnt yet. Also, the neutral indicator behind left footpeg is missing also. So, im not sure when its in neutral. I pulled the plug and grounded it to the cylinder, and I do get spark. I put my finger over the spark plug hole, and i can feel the pull, and exhaust while pushing the starter button. I can also see what i believe to be the piston moving up and down through the hole! So would the compression be ok? I cleaned the air filter and box. I tried removing the carb, but i couldnt figure out how to remove the throttle cable! I sprayed some carb cleaner in the carb, and let it sit for a while. Still nothing! It cranks over, but it will not start. Is there a safety switch that would cause it not to start? Im new to all of this, and any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks

If the neutral switch is missing, how is the engine holding any oil? How is the starter working when the neutral light isn't working? I don't think they're suppose to crank over if the neutral light isn't working. Also, I don't think they will start if the neutral light isn't working.

If it's the neutral switch that's missing, you better check and make sure the engine has oil it it.

If it's firing at the plug, you can pour about a teaspoon of gas down into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Then, quickly, put the spark plug back in before the gas has time to evaporate. Put the spark plug wire back on and try to start it. If it starts and runs for a couple seconds, then your carb is stopped up. But I still can't figure out how it's firing if the neutral light isn't working. Maybe someone has bypassed it, though.

The neutral switch isnt missing, just the indicator that points to the " N" on the case! I havent checked the bulb on the neutral light on the handle bar controls! The only light that comes on when I turn the key, is the headlight! I did check the engine oil, and it reads good on the dip stick, and actually looks fairly fresh!! Im not sure if someone bypassed the neutral light, but the previous owner did add an aftermarket starter switch! I guess the original starter switch on the left handle control did not work. I am using the aftermarket switch to turn the engine over! Hope this clears up some info from my first post! thanks again
