New to the forum, hope I'm in the right section. Also new to working on atv's.

I picked up a 86 fourtax 350 4x4 the other day. (Not running). The PO stated it had fuel issues which was an easy fix (Relay bad). What he didn't tell me is that the reduction gears for the electric start are completely missing.

The parts are available on ebay, but I'm curious why someone would pull them in the first place? Am I going to install these parts just to find I have another issue?

PS: the starter gear and the "flywheel" look to be in good condition. Thanks for any help.

Good lookin ‘86!
My guess maybe the parts were bad and he played out trying to find new ones
Thanks Goober. It's in amazing shape for an 86. The guy even had the owners manual and 20 yrs of oil change records.

I hope that's all it is. I just found the service manual download, so hopefully I'll have a better idea of what I'm dealing with when I have time to read through it.

@_Wilson_ eyup on what I think was called a “cooler” rack.

The starter gear cover for the early 86 is oval compared to later 86s and others. The starter gears are hard to find so you gotta study up and know what Parts you need.

Here’s a pic of my 86 when I first got it—all original. Mine is dated sep 85 I think

Parts probably broke and causing a grinding so he removed them and used the kick starter exclusively. I bought a 350 missing those gears once also. Nice ride you have there.

Still waiting on parts.

Had another question about the fuel filter.
Is anyone still using the stock setup?

Are the elements still available at a reasonable cost?

Any reason not to throw in a $5 parts store inline filter?

The oemfilter is specially designed and shaped to fit in a small particular area on the bike... You may have difficulty running a another type of filter and getting the hoses to connect properly and not kink.

In the USA, those OEM fuel filters (#10 in the photo below) are still available from parts sites such as Partzilla:
https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/16900-HA7-671

And you can generally find them on the fLeebay fraud-ction site for a few bucks more. The rubber boot (#11) that clips them to the frame is obsolete though. You can use a few thick rubber 0-rings to secure the filter to the frame clip if your boot has rotted away.

I am running the OEM setup on all five of mine. I’m an OEM guy—I care about cost but I like the OEM fit and performance most of all,
They cost $30 each. If your holder is missing or bad you can usually find one on fleabane.
You could go a different way, but it’s not gonna look right and your aftermarket will be in your way.

I actually print out the part number and price from Partzilla and my local Honda stealership matches it for me which works out good... I think I paid about $21 for the fuel filter. I like getting OEM Parts when at all possible like goober.

I did have to change the fuel hoses using bulk fuel hose. The stock ones were swollen and brittle and they are molded perfectly to fit the odd space.
The bulk hose has a coil memory so I had to come from the petcock to the filter using a small loop and again same from the filter to the pump. Otherwise the hoses would kink.
It looks pretty good so it doesn’t work on my OCD too badly that it’s not the original setup.

Gears arrived today. First startup sounded pretty rough (a little grinding) after that all was well. I'll see what the first cold start is like tomorrow.

Retro, thanks for the link, got a fuel filter ordered. I think the lines have already been replaced with bulk fuel line.

Took it out to a few local trails to see how it would do. I really like riding it although it's not real comfortable for a guy 6'4".

Bad news is I ended up with a big crack in the front fender. Never even hit anything. I guess 30 yr old plastic is bound to be brittle.
