I am currently looking at purchasing a 1986 Honda TRX 250R. The owner says that it is stock other than the DG pipe that was put on. He has verbally confirmed that there are no cracks in the frame and no engine work has been done on it. The asking price is 2K. From the pictures, it appears to be relatively clean. Just looking for some feedback on whether or not this is a good buy.

When I checked a few years ago, it seemed like the prices were much higher on these. I assume they have come down due to the decrease in demand with the new 450R's coming out.

I previously owned a 400EX that I loved. It was low maintenance and always reliable. However, I only get out a few times a year to ride and could not justify it sitting the rest of the year. I figure something like a 250R will hold value better and I would still have something to go out and have a good time on.

I appreciate any feedback.

Welcome to the forums! the TRX250R was a great quad i had one in 87 wish i stll had it easy to work on doesn't cost much to rebuild and i would say if it has not had any motor work then it need to be rebuilt even if it still runs good 24 years is a long time, post some pics and lets have a look, but 2K is not a bad price, i saw a brand new 89 still in creat on ebay 88K yes thats right 88,000 liked to crap my pants,

Looks good i would offer $1500 but would probably go the 2K if he would not budge on his price, the first thing i would do is get rid of the rear tires and ger some 18 to 20" tall rears

Yeah, the rear tires need to go. The owner has another set of rims to go with it (not sure if they are they originals) and an extra swing arm. He is the original owner and bought it 24 years ago.

Would I be better off looking for a 250R that has had some work done to it? I have seen some out there that are in the same price range but have a lot of extras on them. Currently, I am leaning more toward an original. I do not plan on racing and it will be for recreational riding.

I would rather have one that has not been worked on, it only costs about $200 to rebuild a top end on a 2 stroke.

I would not run anything smaller then 20's if hes gonna trail ride. oh and that 88K 250r you saw was not all orginal. i know the full story on they quad and the other one. it was simply NOS parts bought years ago to built from nos stuff. the owner of the 86 250r 3wheeler did spilled the beans on his friend trying to rip ppl off. i got the entire story lol

anyway, its got realtors on it and i love them tires for snow so keep them!
