I don't know where to start!! The fourtrax I still haven't got pictures of yet has starter problems. The problem is that it ain't workin. The guy I bought it from says it needs a new stator. Is that a common problem and where do I start to find the problem. I haven't done anything yet.

Will the lights work with a good battery in it? Will it start with the kick starter?

When it starts do the lights work? If they do [and since it starts and runs] then the electrical system is at least partially functional. Put a new battery in it. You could try putting a charger on it overnight to see it if it will hold a charge.

Lights do not work when it is runnin. I just atribute that to this atv sitting outside for the last 5 years in the weather. Not sure the bulbs are any good. I will fire it up and check the sockets with a test light to see if I have current to the socket. i will let you know something here in just a little bit.

I don't know all the details about these things, but if it runs then it's at least generating power. Check all the fuses, bulbs and switches, and also see if the battery will hold a charge if you charge it over night.

update on my starter. I hooked jumper cables to my truck and let it sit for a minute. All the lights work including the dash lights. When you hit the starter it made a whining noise like the starter was spinning but wasnt engaging. The motor didn't turn over in other words. Then it just clicks. The thing sounds like it has a bb rolling around in the bottom of the engine when you try to kick start it.

If the starter just spins and the engine doesn't turn over, then your one-way bearing on the starter gear is out. The starter gear is located behind the magneta/flywheel on the left side of the engine. The one-way bearing bolts onto the back of the flywheel and the hub on the starter gear slides into the inside of it.

Thank you. Now do I pull the left side engine cover off or can I get to it by pulling the starter? And does that have anything to do with the "ballbearing" noise i am hearing?
You have to pull the left side cover off and pull the flywheel off. The bearing is bolted to the back of the flywheel.

I don't know about the ballbearing noise. That may be a different problem.

can i just replace the bearing or do i need to replace the starter? and what exactly is the piece?
You don't have to replace the starter, just the bearing. #2 in the diagram below is the one-way starter bearing.

Thats awesome. Thank you for your help on that. Now once this is done I will have to see why it is not charging. The guy I bought it from said it needed a new stator. Didn't know those could go bad like that.

If you know for sure the stator is bad you could replace it when you replace the one-way bearing. The stator bolts in the inside of the left side cover. That's the same side cover you have to take off to get to the one-way bearing. The stator is the round thing in the diagram above, with the wires attached to it. It's #6 in the diagram. It's hard to see the number 6, but it's at the main bottom of the diagram.

It's not a common problem they are usally pretty tough. But what happens is the windings (the copper wire that is wound around the poles in a coil) have a coating on them. Sometimes when the stator gets hot a bare spot will result thus shorting out every other coil. So you will have to replace the stator if it is bad. Hope this tells you a little about them. Because it can get very complicated to rewire one. Believe me I used to do big stators on homemade windmills.

ok. I have looked and found several on ebay this morning that are reasonable. The problem is that the ones that are that are for a 300 trx from the early 90s. The question is what will interchange with my 86 250 fourtrax. I also see one for a 88 250x. HELP!!!!

I'm not sure what will interchange with yours. I haven't got the manuals on them but Helmut has alot of them so I'll leave this question up to him or someone who knows..... Sorry.
