Good question

the 86 and 87 Fourtrax require a model specific CDI. The 87 Foreman has its own CDI. The 88-93 Foreman have their own as well. So If you bought a CDI for the wrong model or an aftermarket CDI yes this could cause problems

Was it running when you bought it?

If you can get it running with regularity I would say the old CDI is ok and would put the old CDI back in and try some of the following.

Click my link to download the service manual. Good troubleshooting diagnostics in there

There’s a lot to check on an unknown machine.
Does your oil light come on momentarily and then go out when you turn ignition on? Oil temp sensor or fan control. Not likely if you only ran it a bit.

Test to see if the engine note changes when you click the choke off and on. The starter valve could be worn and not seating properly—so your choke is always on. That’s where I think you should start

Do you get a buzzing noise when it dies? Then could be fuel pump is not getting any fuel to pump or the pump is not working. I don’t think that’s it though.

The Stock OEM CDI will not cause any harm to other components. A china CDI... extremely high risk, if it even works right at all, for a few minutes. Just don't ever do that and you got nothing to worry about.

Thanks for letting us know! You got awfully lucky, there should have been smoke rising the moment you plugged that china CDI in. China ignition coils smoke OEM CDIs too, in case you ever think about trying that stunt. You already know china carbs and fuel pumps are junk... only the wealthiest of wealthy folks can afford to buy china parts. LOL
