The tabs that hold the inside lip of the tank do not extend out. I have two caps and neither works. I have not found anything out there n how to remedy this. All post are related to the venting port.

Don’t try to take it apart but hit it with some Deep Creep (penetrating oil) and look for burrs where it might have been dropped—smooth out any burrs with a swiss file

the cap tangs is spring loaded. soak the tangs with some penetrating oil, pb blaster, liquid wrench, even wd-40 if ya don't have any of the other brands. lightly turn the knob back and forth, tap on cap ( lightly ! ) and sooner or later those locking tabs will ( or should ) spring out. please keep in mind, you must be pressing down on the under side rim in order for the locking tabs to spring out !.

I had exactly the same problem mate. The 'open close' bit on the top wouldn't budge therefore the tabs wouldn't pop out. Had to get a new one

buying a brand new one is like hitting the million dollar lottery...wont ever happen !..lmao. unless you run across a NOS cap on ebay ?, you can bet your bottom dollar the seller will want a fortune for it !..lol. I went to plastic fuel tank on my '89 trx350D foreman, haven't looked back.

Soak that puppy in any light oil and not solvent or vinegar the rubber does not like it.
That fuel cap knob and screw are precious too so don’t lose them
