Hi,

New to the forum. Recently read how to remove the starter on my 86 Four Trax, which I did. I removed the cover and gear next to the starter gear to allow for room to wiggle starter out. However, in the process, I removed the gear to the left with a shaft about 4 in long and 7/16 diam...which I should not have.

Now I am trying to put it back in place, but I have a washer about 1 in outer diameter that slipped out from shaft and I can"t figure where it fits! HELP!

that washer goes on the very outside of the long shaft after you put the gear on it..then the middle gear roller pin..then the starter..then put the middle gear on..and welcome to the forums.
if it's making the noise i know of..that is your one way bearing on the starter side making that sound..it's the bearings in it thats doing that..it does sound like a bunch of bolts being thrown around inside your motor..they do that..replace your one-way bearing on the starter side..you will need to remove the flywheel in order to do this..once you get the flywheel bolt out..and the flywheel off the crank..there is the starter transfer gear that rides in the backside of the flywheel..in the center of the flywheel is your one-way bearing..this is what makes that awful sound if the bearings are bad..or the starter transfer gear is worn..could be both ???..look at the round part on the starter transfer gear..is it eat up pretty bad ??..or is it smooth ?..if it's really eat up..pitted so to speak..you will need to replace it. as for your bearing..you may as well replace it..i'm sure it's bad.
