I have 2 machines and I have noticed the starter shaft on the 87 is about 1 1/4" long and the 86 is about 5/8". of course I am attempting to blend and get 1 good running machine and was hoping for some help related to different part specs used in the 2 machines. seems odd that they would change a starter shaft and left crankcase cover between the years, but it appears to be the case. any ideas or help is appreciated. simple mechanic here not qualified to rebuild an engine or transmission.

I'm pretty sure that 86 & 87 were the same and 88 had differences..

It could be that you have an 88 motor in an 86/87 frame.

when I do parts look up on the starter, part numbers and diagrams look different. 87 has a longer shaft on the starter than the 86. I am hoping I can swap starters and left crankcase covers. starter gears appear to fit/work/align. not sure about stator and other electric. always looking for assistance. thx
