Welcome to the forums. First, you will need to determine if the problem is in the linkage or the transmission, itself.

I would start by pulling the left side cover and inspecting the linkage. If the linkage looks OK, remove the shifter shaft by pulling it straight out. NOTE: Be warned, once you pull the shifter shaft out, when you put it back in, the right side engine cover has to be removed to retime the clutch lever. After removing the shifter shaft, try to use a pair of pliers to turn the shift drum through each gear. You will probably have to turn the flywheel to get the gears to engage fully. If it will shift through all the gears by turning the shift drum with pliers, the problem is in the linkage.

So what would it be in the linkage ? My 85 big red won't shift , so I am fishing trying to figure my problem out as well .
I would do like I stated above. I would pull the left side cover off and watch the linkage as you try to shift. You should be able to see why the linkage doesn't turn the shift drum, unless it's an internal transmission problem. If you can't see anything wrong with the linkage, then remove the shift shaft and try to turn the shift drum with pliers. You will have to turn the flywheel some to get it to engage the gears fully. If you can't turn the shift drum with pliers, it's an internal problem. If you can turn the shift drum with pliers, something is wrong with the linkage.

Well u can see the shifting drum rotate , there is nothing in the bottom the tranny , like broken parts . I have relaxed the pivot bolt for the linkage , it has all new clutches and centrfugal clutches . It will shift sporatic . One I got all gears to shift but since has not happened . I will try again in the morning . Thanks , Todd
