Hello everyone, this is my first post. So I would just like to thank everyone for their participation and contributing to forums like these, I have been part of such communities before (Jeeps) and the knowledge is endless.

So on to my thread title, I just became the owner of a 2015 rancher fm1 and unfortunately day 1 of riding I head a loud bang.

Upon diff breakdown I found a stripped axle spline situation (common from what i have read) my question is of the ones of you that have had this happen do you also replace the ring gear?

I can clearly tell the axle splines are stripped, but I can't so much tell if the ring gear is bad or not. Are the ring gears made of harder steel than the axle? I would think so but who knows.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and any insight into it.

Honestly, I didn't know it was that common of an issue. Personally, I would grab a service manual or if you have the skills already, just take it completely apart and then assess what needs to be replaced. Once you have everything exposed, you can post some pictures and confident there will be folks here able/willing to give you advice on proper next steps.

Hey thanks for the quick reply's guys!

I have had 3 Jeeps all wranglers (90yj 13 2dr & 14JKU) lovem but i needed a break I think I like building them more than anything . I'm currently into fourwheelers but having a rough go of it.

On a side note this bike has a 2-3" swing arm stretch, which i dont think had anything to do with this failure but i'm worried about the consequences later on.

I think the 28" mega mayhams the previous owner installed didn't help this at all but they do look good : /

I'm a CJ guy. Have two CJ-7's and Dad's Scrambler (he's 80, but has said that unless I really piss him off it will be mine one day).

The stretch shouldn't have affected anything other than pointing that (along with the tires) probably means the bikes been a mud/water toy.

I'd buy a new axle, and replace the bearings and seals on either end of the axle tubes. Check for play on the pinion and the ring gear and see if you need diff bearings.

If you've had a bunch of mud and water in the rear end for awhile you might need to do quite a bit more work. Shouldn't be too expensive if your ring gear is ok. Will just be time consuming.

Are you planning on keeping the bike for a good while? Even if the pinion gear looks good it's worn, axle splines rarely just strip. Their wear down until they strip, normally the axle first, but theirs still wear on the pinion gear, which will eventually wear down the spline on the axle and you'll be back to square one. So back to my question, it will probably run a good while without any problems, but when it goes out again you'll be replacing both, the axle a second time and the pinion gear, or order both and be done with it. If it was mine though? As I've done before, just replace the axle and run with it!
