400ex won't stay running!!

I was riding one day and my atv unexpectedly shut off. It took a few tries to get it running again to ride it home but before I got there it made a loud pop and shut off again. Can anyone please help me I only have a few weeks until the 26th to have it fixed?

Welcome to the forums! Will it still start and run at all? Or does it just keep starting running for alittle bit and shut off like it was before everytime? We need more info for sure. Always start with the easy stuff first. Fuel, spark, and air. I would change the fuel, put a new spark plug in, and clean the air filter for starters. Since that is just easy mantainance stuff anyway that most likely could use some attention.
Last time I checked it starts and runs but I'll be holding the throttle and all of a sudden it'll start slowing down and just shuts off. Ever since the day I was stranded I haven't tried starting it again. Some people have told me it might be the spark plug or the card but I haven't been able to buy the spark plug wrench.
Well before you go pulling the carb off or anything else you are going to need that spark plug changed. You can grind down an 18mm deep well socket or buy a low clearance 18mm. My cheap emgo one just wore out the other day and i have a motion pro one on the way now. Cant complain about the emgo asnit was 5 years old. And i change the plug at every oil change. It almost sounds like its running out of fuel. Sorry but i have to ask the question. Fuel tank is full? And fuel is in the on position? Also how old is the gas thats in it? Is the tank vent hose going down the steering stem shaft? I have seen the stem shaft fill with water and hydro lock the vent and stop fuel from being able to flow before. These are just a few easy things to check.
Yes the tank is full. As for the gas I have completely ran the old fuel out everytime I need fuel I'll just put some more fuel in. I've also left old fuel in the jug without turning the gas line off. I just left Walmart and bought the Stanley spark plug socket set.
Check the pet-cock valve on the tank also and make sure it flows gas properly.
Agree check that petcock at the tank for good fuel flow. It sounds like it's burning the fuel out of the carb bowl then running out of gas.
Check your valves. If they are too tight they will expand when hot and cause the engine to loose compression and loose power but not die necessarily. I had an old XR 250 that did this very thing.
Thanks for your feedback I'll check these things out next weekend.

I changed the spark plug today crunk right up. Thanks for the advice. But it still will not stay running. I'm not sure if it's the old gas or what not. It rode fine but there were particals coming out of the exhaust pipe could that be built up or is it something I should be worried?
