What screws, or bolts, or anything else do i have to remove to get the valve cover off?
after reading this post ( bottom of list )..your not trying to remove the whole rocker box are you ?????..the valve cover only has 2 bolts for each valve cover..most times..two 10mm head bolts keep the valve cover on the rocker box..this is what you need to remove.

If he's just trying to remove the little valve covers you take off to adjust the valves, the 400EX has 4 round covers that screw off. They look like some of the big oil caps for a differential. If he's trying to remove the whole valve/head cover he will have to remove all the bolts shown in the picture I posted above.

yep 17mm I do believe... same as the 250EX and Recons. my 250X cover has all them bolts too.. if you look closely at the center set of bolts you will see an arrow beside them they all will have a copper washer under them. Make sure you put them beck there.

help with ur ex

So the allan wrench bolts dont have to come out? cause I cant seem get this thing off the head....should i hit it with a rubber mallet?
dude the allen wrench bolts go to ur rocker arms, DO NOT REMOVE THEM there should be about 8 to 10 8mm screws, thats it, lightly hit it with a rubber mallet it will come off. also there is one 12 mm bolt right in the middle, dont forget that one

I think you are trying to say that the cap to adjust the valves just turns but does not come out.If this is the case then you may turn it while prying up on the lip if you can get a bite on it.maybe you can post a picture of what you are working on so we can help out better.
