I attached a picture of the chewed up piston. Its bad, but the rings themselves are still pretty much accounted for. Obviously what you're saying is possible, but I did not want to have to split the case if it wasn't totally necessary.

Sounds like I'm going to have to though.. Ah well should be a fun learning experience! Thanks for the advice.

Yeah if the oil wasn't getting where it's supposed to be that might have done it. I noticed that the spring that goes behind the oil filter and keeps it in place was missing, so I'm wondering if that is what caused the issue in the first place. Either way, i'll find out more when I split the case.

140PSI is perfect. I would say that engine failure probably isn't your issue.

After you try starting it for a bit, is the sparkplug wet with fuel? Have you checked the valve lash to make sure they are adjusted properly? Does the carb bowl fill up with gas?
What if the the plug is wet? I’m having similar problem

wet plug tells me its out of time ?, or no spark ?, or not enough compression ?.
