hey guys my 400ex is 3 months old it has maybe 35 hours on it and after the first 10 hours it started smoking after it was hot and when i was hard on the throttle or decelerating letting the eng slowing the machine down so i talked to the service tech and they said some smoking is normal but i also read on another form that the honda 10w40 oil breaks down at hot temps and that 20w50 is better to run from in the winter so does any one else have a smoking issue if not what should i be looking for my 400ex is new its only 3 maybe 4 months old and i clean the air filter after every trail ride so any info would be great

also i had the break in service done at 20 hours and the smoking stopped untill around the 10 hour mark again

first off..the service dept is blowing smoke up your arse !..it's under warranty..tell them to fix it..no honda smokes if the ring's are good !! ( not countting 2-strokes)..10w-40 oil from honda dealers is what i use..it's for wet clutches..don't use any other oil unless you want to replace your clutch disk alot !..oh..by the way..i own a '89 trx350d foreman i restored..new ring's..and it doesn't smoke...at any time.

yours don't count monster..his is new...yours is old..well..prob out of warranty amyway...lol..more than likely..who ever did your top end rebuild..never replaced the valve steam guides..this and bad rings will cause a motor to smoke..if everything is right on a engine..it should not smoke..if it does..something is wrong with it....i own a 1986 honda 250 rebel..and it has not smoked one bit sinse i baught it..6k miles on it..and no smoke..sooo..like i said..his is new..and under warranty..the dealer just doesn't want to work on it..simple as that..if it were mine..i'd have that thing parked in thier office !..so they knew i wanted it fixed !..lol

ok guys i changed my oil tonight and ran it good and hard and i noticed that it was white smoke and it did not have an oil smell to it so i am gonna mark the dip stick and run it at a local trail and see if the oil level drops also i have the stock slow jet but i have a 155 main jet because i put an exhaust tip on it for better sound and the paper that came with it said to switch to a 155 main jet

You are getting the run around. Make em fix it. A new quad should never smoke.

I have seen some old ones go a few hundred hours without a rebuild and only smoke when the motor is cold. Mine is a 2001 needs to be rebuilt and doesn't smoke bad at all. Only on heavy engine braking.

i can tell you first hand..alot of the newer atv's don't hold up long on thier motors ( this comes from a well known honda mechanic i know )..they just don't cut it on thier new motor's..the cylinders don't last long at all..sooo..if your new atv is smoking ( yes..i repsonded to your other post about warranty )..put it back to stock as for the jets..an after market ex wont cause it to smoke !!!..tell them to fix your ride..or you will see them in court...i'll bet my last beer dollar..they will fix it !

good deal bro..don't let them try one over on ya..most dealers will..any time they have to fix something under warranty..thats money out of thier pocket..soo..keep an eye on your bike..watch the oil..and you may want to go back to stock jets in your carb..if it's a carb issue with your jets..the dealer won't cover this under warranty..because it's not a factory product..sooo..my advise to you is..put your stock jets back in when even you see the smoke..it may be running too rich.if this is the case..they surely wont fix it..or have too anyway !
