I have a 2000 400ex recently rebuilt, the other day after riding the oil started coming out of the dipstick I go check it today and it shows no oil on the stick. I added a little bit started it up got it up to temp shut it down checked it again tank is completely full ready to overflow. Any thoughts what it could possibly be not sure if it's a pump issue clogged screen or filter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the oil lines and oil cooler, there may be a blockage somewhere.

If not, could be the pump or screen as you said.

Yap, I'd start there just to eliminate the possibility of a clog in the lines somewhere.

It's the easiest thing to check.

May as well pull the screen out of the oil container as well and make sure it's not clogged either.

On a 400ex this is a very common thing. This engine has a very specific way to check oil and also for putting oil in. To check the oil properly. You have to start the quad and cannot touch the gas for 5 minutes if its above 30 degrees and 10 if its below 30 degrees. Then shut it off and check it. The way this engine works is the oil pump scavanges. So when its sitting and not running the oil will be barely touching the dipstick because alot of oil runs into the crank case. This is where people go wrong. They check it after it sits over night and they see its low. They add some and then when it starts up it will be ready to overflow. Honestly your discription sounds spot on for this case. When your filling the oil after an oil change you put 1 quart in and start it for a few seconds. Then put the rest in. Follow the manual info for capacitys.

Sorry for the long delay in responding after the storms last week today was my first day off. I drained the oil but when it was done I noticed that the oil tank was still full. So I removed the line and drained the rest of the oil out of the tank I’m not sure if that’s normal for the tank to remain full or not so I cleaned the screen put it back together filled it like you said and it seemed to be normal but I will let you know next time I get a chance to ride. Thanks again for all your help!
