I just bought this 01 400 ex from someone for 600 dollars and it wouldnt start not i have it running. After it starts its making a knocking noise and wont stay running strong. I ran sea foam through it and it looses power when i take off and boggs down when it is running after a few min. Curiosity has me wondering how much does it cost to have the whole engine rebuilt.:shocked: PS the motor is an 05

Tear it down... piston skirt or rod or crank bearing. Don't run it anymore. Cost depends on if you are doing it and whats broke.

depends..is your piston making the noise ?..or is the bottom crank rod/bearing bad ?..is the valves bent ?..bent crank ?..alot depends on what all is broken with it ??????.

drain the oil and check the filter see any metal particles?, also check the compression that would give you an idea of how poorly treated it was

nope..me either..if it's making that kinda noise..it won't make it go away by cranking it over and over !..lol..he needs to tear it down..inspect it.

thaxs for the feed back i appreciate it. It runs but i was thinkn of tear down just not sure if i can do it myself im military and a mechanic for the army aviation ,BUT i wasnt for sure how many special tools i was gonna need. plus my garage isnt the cleanest it gets dusty as all hell. Would it be better to take bike to mechanic for teardown and build? Im tryn to save a litttle cash i dont want to spend too much. Time isnt of the essence though. LOL i want to ride it but want to have it running right!! Anyone know of some good site to piece it together for reasonable prices. Its gonna take me a while to get the parts. :funnysuzuki::yeahbaby01:

its all funa and games haha. Seems to me im doin my job otherwise there would be more fatalities in the aviation side of the war. But you dont hear of any HUH.:icon_ laughup: I was just makin sure my tools are gonna be adequete i dont have spanner wrenches and shit like ring compressors or valve sring pliers,feeler guages,etc. The build is gonna cost me more without building more to my toolbox.

Harbor Freight is your friend. But the most money you can save is to never spin that motor again until it is fixed.

Hey... don't listen to me... bang the hell out of the starter... tear it up... Dan thinks a knocking motor can't do any more harm so charge that battery and tear it up baby. Grind it to death.

Dan the difference is a cracked skirt now versus a locked motor and bent rod... broken crank... broken valves... many non serviceable parts versus serviceable parts !


Note to self "Some people just shouldn't own tools ! or be allowed to give internet advise."

bollt you are right just tear it down. moose you got the skill and you can shop out the little stuff to a machine shop but you can do the rest take some pics for us as you go

i just gotta get my 2 cents in here...as bolt has said..a motor that is still turning over now..may not turn over after a few more rounds !!!..until you have torn a engine completely down..and have seen what all can get bent..broken..twisted..stripped...that man does not need to crank it over anymore..that is..unless he's rich ???...bolt..you know your stuff..i'll give you this my man !
