Here is my magnum cam with it at tdc. You can see how the oil holes are in a different spot. And the factory cam oil holes are also in the same spot. So unless hotcam is different for some reason which i doubt.

@Carolynskiii
Me and TorqueDaddy compared our hot cams and they are the same, we are going to adjust valves and then pull clutch cover off and look at that.

Thanks for all the replies guys...will keep you posted

I wish I knew more so I could offer some help, but this thread is very interesting and a good learning tool!

Intake valves being adjusted to tight shouldnt have any effect on power. Would make it a bear to start usually though. The new clutch on the other hand would fix lack of power for sure! Glad you got her ripping though! Enjoy that honda!

Sure it would! Profoundly!!! LOL

God you got it going fellas...!
Not trying to thread jack here. But i need some explaination for this one for sure. I have adjusted valves that were way to tight and way to loose and never felt or noticed any lack of power before. Or gain of power after. It always just made them noisy. Or the motor would turn over 100 times before firing. I mean unless the valves were being held open all the time of which the valve to piston clearance isnt enough to not bend a valve in that case in these interferance 400ex motors.

They were tight...I couldn't move them up and down at all from TDC. It also started and idled great before I took anything apart. Wish I wouldn't have done them both at once so we would know for sure... The only reason I didn't adjust them was because for whatever reason, my flywheel would spin past TDC on the compression stroke every time. After putting it together this time it lined up fine!

A reminder... gotta go back and revisit your jetting again. That band-aid gotta come off now... Start at the bottom and then midrange then when its broken in a bit, do a longish WOT run (only if you have a safe place to do that, don't run over anyone or crash yourself!) and cut it. Yank the plug and see what ya got...

Yeah anytime the valve cover comes off you need to check valve adjustment on this engine. And i have found alot of times its the same as it was before. But every once in a while its way off what it was for some reason. Its like the valve cover gets into a slightly different spot. Glad you got it though for sure! My gut still says clutch fixed it but we will never know for sure.

New cam ain't ever gonna work on an old valve adjustment. :)
'Nuther 'minder... recheck the valve lash frequently as the cam breaks in and settles. You WILL have to take up some slack at some point. :)

EDIT:
Save your original clutch, probably just as good as the one you put in it... or better.

Ya, check the valve lash often. Its gonna wear fast... you apparently used old rockers on a new cam, which potentially can open a new and bigger can of worms. Keep a controlled lid on it by keeping your eyeballs on it. :)

Thank you very, very much!!! That goes for both of you! Many people post about their problem here then leave... without ever coming back and telling us whether the problem was found and fixed or not. So, we are usually left wondering if the person was helped or not... Since many of us are here to help others through sharing, we may tend to feel a bit putoff.... and we miss opportunities to learn from others and improve... and opportunities to correct our mistakes if we made any....

So again, THANKS for sharing!

Thanks @retro and @SlammedRanger.

I'll be sure to check valves again soon and play with the jetting to make sure its tuned right.
No problem at all! Always glad to help where ever and when ever i can. And learning stuff along the way is just a bonus!
