Sounds like clutch to me. Stock 400ex clutch isnt good to begin with. And when you add anymore power they are really bad. My .02

Both of us have a stock intake with K&N filters. I used honda GN4 oil but who knows what previous owner was using.
Had this exact same thing happen to my quad i have now. Previous owner put car oil in it. Clutch looked like it was in a camp fire. But it was perfectly fine until i put the proper oil in it. After that it slipped so bad i couldnt get the front end off the ground in 1st gear popping the clutch even. It was just pitiful! I put an ebc dirt racer clutch with 20% stronger springs and it was back to normal.

I think the timing looks good...is this how it should look?

The cam in that picture is 100% not in the right position if you are at TDC. The oil holes should not be pointed almost straight up like that. I bet the cam sprocket hub that goes onto splines on the cam is indexed wrong. There is 1 extra thick spline to try to make it harder to index wrong but it still can be done. But that would explain a lack of power for sure!

The cam is splined. And the hub that the sproket bolts to is splined also. Im not sure about hot cams. But my magnum cam i had to use my press and take the factory hub and sprocket off my factory cam and press it on my magnum. If that is what hot cams does also then it would be possible to put it on the splines wrong.

Here is my magnum cam with it at tdc. You can see how the oil holes are in a different spot. And the factory cam oil holes are also in the same spot. So unless hotcam is different for some reason which i doubt.

Intake valves being adjusted to tight shouldnt have any effect on power. Would make it a bear to start usually though. The new clutch on the other hand would fix lack of power for sure! Glad you got her ripping though! Enjoy that honda!

Sure it would! Profoundly!!! LOL

God you got it going fellas...!
Not trying to thread jack here. But i need some explaination for this one for sure. I have adjusted valves that were way to tight and way to loose and never felt or noticed any lack of power before. Or gain of power after. It always just made them noisy. Or the motor would turn over 100 times before firing. I mean unless the valves were being held open all the time of which the valve to piston clearance isnt enough to not bend a valve in that case in these interferance 400ex motors.

Yeah anytime the valve cover comes off you need to check valve adjustment on this engine. And i have found alot of times its the same as it was before. But every once in a while its way off what it was for some reason. Its like the valve cover gets into a slightly different spot. Glad you got it though for sure! My gut still says clutch fixed it but we will never know for sure.

I'll be sure to check valves again soon and play with the jetting to make sure its tuned right.
No problem at all! Always glad to help where ever and when ever i can. And learning stuff along the way is just a bonus!

If you had a bent valve you would really know it. Because your piston would have a hole in it mostlikely. If you had a stuck valve your cam would be wiped or rocker arm. Or if it was really stuck the whole engine would stop turning completely. I would start by removing the spark plug in hopes maybe it fouled out. But working well for 10 minutes and then going back tells us very little. Any new symptoms? Or exactly the same as before? Not bogging or cutting out just lack of power? Were gunna get to the bottom of this. Maybe try swapping cdi's with your buddy? Maybe its not advancing your ignition properly?
