Sounds like clutch to me. Stock 400ex clutch isnt good to begin with. And when you add anymore power they are really bad. My .02
Had this exact same thing happen to my quad i have now. Previous owner put car oil in it. Clutch looked like it was in a camp fire. But it was perfectly fine until i put the proper oil in it. After that it slipped so bad i couldnt get the front end off the ground in 1st gear popping the clutch even. It was just pitiful! I put an ebc dirt racer clutch with 20% stronger springs and it was back to normal. Both of us have a stock intake with K&N filters. I used honda GN4 oil but who knows what previous owner was using.
I think the timing looks good...is this how it should look?![]()

Not trying to thread jack here. But i need some explaination for this one for sure. I have adjusted valves that were way to tight and way to loose and never felt or noticed any lack of power before. Or gain of power after. It always just made them noisy. Or the motor would turn over 100 times before firing. I mean unless the valves were being held open all the time of which the valve to piston clearance isnt enough to not bend a valve in that case in these interferance 400ex motors.Sure it would! Profoundly!!! LOLIntake valves being adjusted to tight shouldnt have any effect on power.
God you got it going fellas...!
No problem at all! Always glad to help where ever and when ever i can. And learning stuff along the way is just a bonus! Thanks @retro and @SlammedRanger.
I'll be sure to check valves again soon and play with the jetting to make sure its tuned right.
