When I disassembled my 400ex it didnt have a decompression pin. It has the stock cam so I’m not really sure what’s going on. Should I put one in there or since there wasn’t one in there should I just leave it alone? I’m very confused lol

If its missing the pin and the decomp mech is still on the cam im shocked it ran at all. Without that pin the machanism never locks in place and would be opening a valve slightly every revolution. I have seen many if them that people lost the pin and starting it was impossible. Unless someone grinded the tab off the side of the rocker arm maybe? I have seen that before aswell.

I’m not really sure what to look for on the rocker arms but I’ll take some pictures in a couple days and maybe you could take a look at them. I’d do it now but it’s all ripped apart in my grandmas barn lol. I’ll head over there in a day or so.

Can do! Whats really scary is where did that pin go? Is it down inside the engine somewhere? I kinda hope the rocker arm is modified. Atleast then you can say someone removed the pin on purpose.

Yea that’s what I’ve been thinking. This thing is just a headache. I’m honestly just thinking about taking it to someone so they can look it over, put new bolts and things in the top end (not the head bolts or anything like that) because they’re absolute garbage, throwing that piston in, and calling it a day. And if that thing isn’t grinded off I’m just gonna get a new cam of some sort to be safe. There’s a couple magnum cams on eBay I saw earlier so that’s pretty cool to see.

How much would it be to go ahead and do a basic 416? (Piston, cylinder bore, Head studs, cam, cam chain, gaskets). Because honestly what I’m getting into it probably wouldn’t cost much more lol. I know it kinda depends on who I get to bore and different stuff like that but just an estimate.

The bore and head stud install is gunna be your only difference in price really. Pistons are gunna be dang near the same price stock bore high comp to a 416 piston.

throwback to the last time my quad ran HAHA. My poor little iPhone couldn’t handle the volume lol. I have a picture with the head cover off and I couldn’t really see it too well but I don’t think I see the decompression pin. That’s so weird. I’m heading over to my grandmas later today and I’m gonna take some pictures of the rocker arms for ya. If that thing on the arms isn’t grinded off I’m not sure what I’m gonna do. I’m afraid if I get my cylinder bored and get all my parts and put it back together and that pin is down in the bottom end I’m just gonna cry lol. I’m almost scared to look at the head cover because I feel like that pin is in the bottom end somehow or another. I’m not really sure how that’s possible but I guess anything can happen unfortunately.

I have no idea. Idk what to do because if I rebuild it and that pin is in the bottom end I’m screwed.

Yeah i did. Its probably that tab on the rocker arm hitting the cam decomp mech. But im still baffling over how it ran at all. I would pull the clutch side cover off and see if the pin is in the strainer screen down at the bottom. Once you have the clutch side cover off its held in with 1 bolt. 10mm i believe.

Yea that makes sense because It didn’t do it a whole lot at idle but the second it starts to rev up you’ll hear it.

Ah I see. I’m realllyyyy thinking about getting a 450 and building it strictly for racing. Then keep my 400 for riding. I’m not doing it right now but that’s the goal. Gonna take a lot of money but I can do it if I try.

I like beating 450s with my 400. When your the underdog and still win its all rider talant. Sadly my 400 looks so much like a 450 no one knows it lol.

I have the 08 model and mines didn’t have it either. It didn’t have the pin and spring or the mechanism I think the 07 and under models are different. Not 100 percent sure but everyone I’ve seen like that are 07s and under. It’s confusing me also and mine is completely stock also
