my sons 400 puffed sum white smoke started knocking and now it wont turn over and theres no oil left in the resovoir:icon_frown:

Welcome to the forums... When was the last time the oil was checked? He should have heard the engine getting louder as the oil level dropped. the puff of smoke combined with the no oil isn't a good sign.

Welcome to the forums. I agree with Moose. If the engine won't turn over now, it may have got hot and seized up.

Not real good with the 400ex but does it have an oil filter or a oil screen? is it stopped up if a screen if filter is it in backwards, have seen this happen on the 450r's backwards filter, will burn up a motor.

Yeah, the 400EX has an oil filter and yes, if you put them in backwards,it will stop the oil flow and damage the engine. You are right about that 69.

I apologize if you think that we thought that you are stupid.... That isn't the case bro. sometimes starting with the basics will lead the the root of the issue. ok you were 3 hours into the riding I see that , if there isn't a skid plate under the quad have you checked to see if the drain plug is still there? I have seen guys drag them off trail riding. Or your resovior didn't by chance get a hole knocked in it?Either way you have more than siezed the engine. the only way to know is to remove the plug and try to shine a light in the hole to inspect the cylinder wall, this is alot quicker than removing the head.

yep..sounds like a siezed engine to me..if thats the case..it's time to tear the top end down..and pull the piston..rings..valves..inspect them all for wear or damage.

Yeah, I put a hole in the bottom of the crankcase on an ATV once, too.
