I have a 99 foreman 400 4x4. It was running fine and I cut it off and changed the oil now it won't crank. I have replaced the spark plug. I'm getting fire at the plug. I'm getting gas to the carb. I have good compression. I've tried spraying starter fluid in the carb and turning it over and nothing. I'm thinking maybe the coil but I am getting spark I just don't know what it could be. Please help

Do you have a good, bright blue spark?

Is it possible that I jumped timing
I guess it's possible, but make sure you have a good strong blue spark before ruling out a spark problem. If your spark is red or orange colored, it's not strong enough.

How Would u go about checking to see if it jumped timing? I really feel like it has something to do with the spark. But in my experience I would think it would go out completely not work half ass!
You will have to pull the front cover off to check the timing.

No, a lot of times, you will just get a weak spark.

whats odd is..you say it was running fine...right up until you shut it off....changed the oil..then when you went to crank it..it won't crank ?..hmm...by any chance..did you install the oil filter in backwards ?..this will give you a bad day if you did !.

Ok so I went and check my spark being that's its dark and I can see a arc better. So I took the boot off the plug and pointed it up and hit the starter. The result being that it arced through the boot to the engine block. So I'm thinking I need to replace the whole cable or just the boot? Any ideas?

sinse when do you pull covers just to check timming ???..isn't there a inspection cap you remove to line up the index on the flywheel on that bike ??..i know i'm old and all..but..geee..i've never had to remove a cover just to set the timming.

And no I didn't even change the filter so that can't be it
well..like helmut said..you may not be getting a strong enough spark..which means..c.d.i..stator..pulse generator..or spark plug coil.

Take the sparkplug out and snap it back into the boot and ground the threaded end of the sparkplug against the cylinder. Now crank the engine and look at the spark where it jumps from the electrode to the ground strap on the plug. If you get a good, bright blue spark, it's fine. If it's orange or red colored, it's too weak.

How are you going to see the marks on the cam gear without pulling the cover?

The only thing the "T" mark on the flywheel is going to tell you is that the piston is on TDC. The front cover has to come off to check the position of the cam. No other way around it that I know of.

Yeah, most of the time, you have to pull the engine so you will have room to work on them. LOL.

Ok so when I take the spark plug out and snap it back into the boot and put it against the block it sparks blue. But when I take the plug out of the boot and hit the starter it arcs from where the boot connects to the wire. So I'm thinking that is the problem. If not I don't have a freaking clue. Btw there is no damaged spots on the boot or wire.
