Have a 2001 350ES that keeps getting stuck in fifth gear. It had a new angle sensor installed a while back from the previous owner. If you run down the road less than a half mile in fifth gear it will shift back down fine, but if you go over a half mile or so it will stay stuck in fifth until you turn the key off and then back on. As soon as you turn the key off and back on, it will downshift just fine, as if something resets. I don't know if the speedometer has anything to do with it or not, but it is very sporadic on it's readings ranging from 0 to 99 while driving down the road.

Welcome to the forums. The first two things to check is to make sure the battery is fully charged and the clutch free play is adjusted properly. You could have a bad speed sensor or a bad gear position switch. Since the '01 doesn't have the ability to store trouble codes like the '03 and up does, you will have to do a series of tests on the various components of the ES system with a multimeter. The easiest way for you to do this would be to download the repair manual and go to chapter 21. Chapter 21 will instruct you on how to test the ES system. There's a flow chart that will tell you what to check. Here is the link for downloading the repair manual for the 2000-2003 Rancher 350.
