Hi everyone, I recently helped a friend rebuild his 300ex motor. we installed a big bore 330 kit on it and a new stage 1 cam. no air box lid and a uni air filter. after riding hard for about 30min. it develops a "ticking" or "pinging" sound. It also seems to start burning oil at that time. any help would be appreciated

Did you jet the carb right ! Pull the plug and check the color.

carb is jetted right. plug color looks good. installed an oil cooler. the noise is more of a valve clatter when hot. the motor starts to push oil vapor out the upper breather hose after about 20mins of hard running. he is running castrol 4stroke semi-synthetic 10w-40. he will be switching to 20w-50 castrol. we are out of ideas at this point.

Sounds like it could be the valves or the seats

Is your oil pump pumping oil up to the top of the head good, where the oil line attaches to the top of the valve cover?

yup, oil is pumping good to the top. jusst not sure why it is pushing out the breather tube and why the valves clatter bad only when hot though. first 20 mins of riding it is great, no problems at all

Have you checked to see if it's pumping oil after it gets hot and starts clattering? The oil pump might not be pumping good when it gets hot. Just a thought.
