i am wanting to buy a K&N air filter for my 300ex. right now it has some rigged up air filter and doesnt want to stay running for very long so i figured it might be because of the air filter. do i need to rejet the carb or do anything if i put the K&N air filter in? Will using a new aif filter maybe help it from dying as much?

A new filter couldn't hurt. If you go to a K&N you will probably have to rejet. I recommend UNI, NoToil, or Supertrap.

if im not sure how to rejet it is it very hard? or should i take it to a shop? Also i need to adjust or get a new timing chain is that also something i should do or just have a shop do that also?

The timing chain can be tricky, so can jetting. If you can, having a shop do it is your best bet since you have never done it. It is one of those things you do it once you get the hang of it. If you decide to try the stuff yourself, we ar here to help you out.
