The 93 I just picked up is first gen style. What do I need to do to the motor to have it ready to go as a spare for a 2nd or 3rd gen 300?

I am under the impression I just need to swap out the flywheel and stator to the later style. Is that correct?

Isn't the stator plug different? Its been a while so I could be wrong, but it seems like the 1st gen motor won't plug into the harness (or work with the newer CDIs) on 2nd/3rd gen bikes...?

My wife's 300 has a 90 engine in a 96 frame , it has the 90 wiring harness and light switch assembly because the choke cable , choke plunger and the lever where the cable mounts are different , I don't know if you can put a later model carb with the shorter plunger ----- the 1st gen cdi will turn up an extra 1000 rpm's , don't know if you can put a 1st gen cdi in a 2nd gen wiring harness

You cant use a 2nd gen stator with a 1st gen flywheel. As long as you have a matching set the motors will swap back and forth as a whole with no problems.

Stator plugs are the same. however, I could be mistaken, but I believe that the flywheel may be a different size on the first gen, don't quote me on that though.
Well looks like the flywheels are the same all the way through, although there are two different ones listed (Denso and Mitsuba)

Looks like FOUR different stator part numbers in 88...seriously!

So mac, you're saying I can swap this motor just like it is into a late model 300?

The CDI interchanges are confusing as hell too.

From what I gathered in that thread, the CDI's will interchange in Gen 1 and Gen 2?

I was under the impression that the first gen bikes the engine and wiring harness and CDI all had to be swapped if any of them had to be swapped. Was that all in my head?

The CDI pinouts (6 of them) are all the same on 1st & 2nd gen 300s. You may or may not need to bring a harness plug along when making a swap, depending on the bike. Since pinouts are the same each CDI can be adapted to the appropriate harness plug.

Yes absolutely. Engine itself will swap just fine. The only thing I’d do is make sure the carb jetting is the same if your using a 2nd gen carb on it use the same jets as the 88-92 has.

Wiring cdis and whatnot you might be thinking of the 86-87 350 vs later models.

I can tell you this;

A few years back I tried using a CDI box off a 2nd gen 300 (I think it was around a 94), on a 1st gen (If I recall correctly it was a 89) what I found was, when I went to install the CDI box, the plugs on the CDI were opposite of the plugs on the harness, (big deal right?) so I just went ahead and re-arranged the harness plugs and installed CDI ------- NO SPARK (I thought this was odd because I know its a good CDI.)

To verify CDI is still good I Go back to original harness, test it ------- good spark.

I can tell you for some reason there IS a variation throughout the years (I cannot remember which years) but they wont all interchange.

A quick way to tell is by verifying the plug orientation on the cdi itself. some of them will have the alarm box plug to the left, some have the alarm plug to the right.

keep that orientation with the harness and your good to go.

I'm sure that sounds confusing, but its how it has to be if your swapping CDI's.

Honestly if they aren't plug and play I'll probably just order a Rick's and be done with it.

I have two Gen 1 CDI boxes and I'm going to keep later model 300's so if they'd work I'd use them. If they won't I'll leave them on the first gen bikes and just buy Rick's CDI's for the ones I keep.

I'll look more closely at what I have and see what I find.
