I bought a 2003 250EX. I called the dealer to get an oil filter and got one. Its the paper type.

I got home, drained the oil and can not find the oil filter for the life of me.

Am I blind, or where is hiding?

I don't know what they gave you, but I don't think a 250EX has an oil filter. It just has a screen on the inside of the crankcase and you have to split the case to get to it.

Thanks guys.

Why would they not make the filter easier to access? Obviously no-one is going to spit the case every time they clean the oil. This is not a cheap Chinese quad, so why did they doing this?

My 1986 ATC125M has a paper oil filter on the side and that is a lower end trike in terms of displacement.

My 2002 Honda Rancher 350 also has a paper oil filter, and I thought they shared the same block minus different bore/stroke?

I'm kinda disappointed. Seems like they tried to cheap out.

Am I wrong to think this is a bad thing?

I couldn't agree more but i suppose it has something to do with the design of the engine.

yo will it hurt if i just put oil in it and not breake the oil case to change oil.
Welcome to the forums. That's what most people do. The screen isn't a regular maintenance item. Most people only clean the screen if they are going into the engine for other repairs.

lol, I found this out when I was changing my oil, but also noticed that my manual says Maintenance Interval is 1200 miles or every 200 hours. So they are basically saying every 2 oil changes, that I should clean this flat filter. Can anyone give me peace of mind?

I purchased this quad used. Does anyone recommend any type of flush that won't harm my quad? Marvel Mystery Oil or SeaFoam? Or should I do as you all suggest and just keep changing the oil?

Yep I had a 2003 350ex and I was like WTF? haha wheres the oil filter? It does not have one really it's just that screen at the bottom. It's not something you clean on a regular basis though. I had mine for like a year or two and never cleaned it not from negligence but it just doesn't really need it.

You know i just posted the same question. I have an 05 250 and cant seem to find anywhere there would be a filter.
The 250EX doesn't have an oil filter, it only has a screen in the bottom of the engine and you have to split the crankcase to get it out. Just keep your oil changed regularly and you will be fine. Most people never clean the screen and never have a problem.

you sir, got ripped off!! just kiddin, i have an 07 recon (basically same machine as yours just different plastics) and i just change my oil every now and then, not a "regular" basis just when i feel like it. i also change rear axle fluid every other oil change. no problems at all. the dealership i buy parts from said dont worry about it unless you just want it cleaned out, that was from a mechanic that was at the parts counter the same time i was.

Use half quart oil, 1 quart diesel and run for a minute or so then drain. This will flush out the block. If it’s first time and plenty hours, do it twice. I flush everything this way. Dad showed me 40 yrs ago. 1/2 to 1 ratio works nicely.

I know this is an old thread but was just browsing and this caught my eye. The 2001-2002 do also have an oil filter located on the centrifugal clutch. Quote from manual"Remove the mounting bolts and oil filter cover from the centrifugal clutch." There is the area between clutch nut and the cover plate that has a gasket on it with the 3 bolts(oil filter cover is what they say it is called). This is the oil filter because oil passes through wet clutch and is filtered by the gasket, in essence the oil filter.
