i'd be willing to bet, your son sank it, dealer seen this, and this is why they wont cover it under warranty !. once its sunk ?, no warranty will ever cover it. you should set your son off to the side, offer him some '' butt kicking '' or honesty ?!..lol. I know for a fact..honda will not cover any new machine once they seek snorkels ?, or trash in engine ?. your best bet ?, buy oem from honda, tear it apart, and fix it yourself. if honda does it ?, well..there goes your sons college funds !..lol. while your at it, MAKE SURE YOU INSPECT THE CONNECTING ROD AT BOTH TOP AND BOTTOM FOR ANY PLAY ??!!.

The dealer said it was the oil pump then changed their mind and said dirt got in through the filter.and the dealer took it all apart to see the piston scortched on one side. how does dirt get past an oem air filter ??..lol. sounds like this dealer does not want to fix it under warranty then !. before you go tearing it apart !!!!!..call honda and tell them whats going on. I just dont see how dirt got past the oem air filter, and ruined the engine..this makes no sense to me. it does have an oem air filter on it...right ???.

Some will actually work nice tacky foam filter oil into and throughout the filter like they should. But the know-nothings will just put them in there dry and certain to have your brand new atv sucking in dust if you are riding in conditions that have it. Would be hard to prove to Honda if your filter came inadequately oiled once it leaves the dealer, but would certainly be worth a try if this is actually what happened.

if the filter is oem ?, and its never been changed lately ?, or even if it has been ?, and done right by the owner ?, then it should still be oily period.

Yes that is all fine and dandy, but Honda is going to claim innocence until proven guilty when it comes to warranties. Because who is to say that the owner didn't clean the filter themself, and then not oil it properly. It doesn't matter if it is an oem filter or an aftermarket filter. I side with the owner on this one, but I'm just playing devil's advocate here.
