Hey all,

Been a busy winter with work. I saw a cartoon the other day where a group of guys were questioning a guy on the other side of the table. They asked "How long did you work during your last Job?" He answered "30 years!"
They asked "What's your age?" He answered "20 Years old" They asked "You are 20, and you have 30 years experience? How is that possible?" He answered "Overtime!"
That sure is the way I've felt over the winter, been doing the finish trim in several houses over the winter and it has been a nightmare. Everything seems to fall on the trim guy. When everyone else puts the job behind it's the trim guy that has to make up for the time and on top of it make it look great. I have been working from 6:00am until 8:00 - 10:00pm 6 days a week for the last 3 1/2 months. Waaaaay too old for this crap. Finally finished up and onto another project, unfortunately outside and, late winter early spring in Montana does not make for the most favorable working conditions. All of that to catch up a bit.

I am looking at a used 2016 Honda Rubicon. Anyone have any experience or thoughts about it? After these last 3 years of trail riding my wife and I have decided that we need to get something with power steering and independent suspension. Our trails are great but the Ranchers just aren't made for trail riding, it is just too hard on the passenger when riding double, and to hard for my wife when she rides by herself to shift smoothly and to fight the ruts and hairpin turns of the trails without the power steering. The only thing that concerns me about this machine is the ES and DCT, I guess I shouldn't say "only thing" those are pretty major concerns. It is in pretty decent shape and only has 2200 miles on it. Like the first Rancher we bought, it has been used on a Potato farm since new for the last couple of years, does not appear to be beat up at all, and they trade in or sell their machines every two years. They keep five machines on the farm at all times, All Honda's, and service them regularly at the dealership with Honda oils and differential lubes. I asked if they have had any issues with the ES or transmissions at all and he told me they never have. In wanting a machine with power steering and independent suspension I really want to stick with a Honda but this seems to be the only thing out there close to what we want and that would be easiest for my wife to operate other than going to a Yamaha Grizzly or Can Am with full automatic snowmobile like throttle. And with the type of riding we do with a lot of slow riding and climbing, the Can Am's have a terrible heat(from exhaust) issue. Any thoughts would be appreciated, Thanks FF.

I have one. Its very comfortable, & seems to be reliable. Havent done a thing to it in about 3000kms. I checked the rear end gear oil a few weeks ago & its still pretty clear, thick & topped up, original oil since new. Been in water up to the bottom of the seat a few times & run the odd time the past 3 winters now. (Bought in Oct 15).

You will have to find out if the shift program has been updated

They can update the ecm to have a smother shift pattern, some have had rough shifting in the 14-16 models, they addressed the problem in 2017

I have a fs, but have read a lot about it, on this site and others

My $.02: You remember that I owned a 2016 Honda Rancher DCT EPS. So...I'd say similar enough to make the comparison. I put about 3300 miles on mine before I sold it. The AUTO DCT tranny was flawless for me. I loved it. I used it regularly in both shift modes. Also, we loved the EPS, and it never gave us a single issue. It sure made the trail rides nicer.

The Grizzlies and Kodiaks EXCEL in the slow technical stuff because of their Honda like centrifugal wet clutch, combined with constant belt tension. Huge difference between the Yamaha Ultramatic and the CanAm CVT. The CanAms do not excel in the slow technical stuff. I'd also rate the Suzuki King Quad drive train right behind the Yamaha and ahead of CanAm.

Yea i would buy a Yami over a Can Am as well. i had been looking at the Kodiacs here at the dealer only because of price & engine size, but the guys around here that bought them said they werent impressed with the handling & ride comfort, compared to the Grizzly. That might be the better choice IMO.

Can Am

Thanks guys. I don't know what I'm gong to do. Every Grizzly I've looked at that is within 2 hrs of me is in the $7500 prize range and already have at least 4000 miles on them. We have two different sets of friends that have Can Am 2-up machines and both love them. One is a 570 the other is an 850. The Honda I'm looking at is local and has 2200 miles on it, they want $6350. I found a 2016 Can Am 570 2-up with 260 miles on it for $6250, they bought it to use as an extra for when their kids came to visit or for company to use, said that it has only been run around their property a little and had only two trips to the mountains, appears to be in great shape. Problem is it is about 6 hours one way from here. My wife's aunt lives about 45 miles away from where it is located and am trying to get them to go look at it for us. I keep going back and forth. Stick with a brand that I know is ultra dependable? or go for something I know will be very comfortable for my wife to drive and ride on. It would be so much simpler if Honda just made a 2-up trail machine:grin. If I bought one of these Grizzlies or this Rubicon how many miles am I going to get out of it? Especially if the Grizzly already has 4000+ miles on it? I would like to get one of my Ranchers sold first, I don't need 3 machines. I've had it listed all winter and not even a bite. I've notice there are a lot of atv's for sale, I don't know if everyone is going to the side X sides or what. I didn't think I was too out of line with my price of $4300 for a 2013. There are plenty of substantially older Ranchers for sale with the same amount of miles for the same price or more. I certainly don't want to drop the price much more otherwise will be going backwards. Does this look like it's worth $4300?
Also anything (Grizzly wise) that has less than a 1000 miles on it is in the $8000+ range so I might as well go new. There is a 2014 700 Grizzly with 466 miles for $7900 but that is still more than what I want to spend for a used machine. I don't know just keep looking I guess.

isn't your sales tax like 7%? I'd be paying $615 tax plus shipping on something that was $8800. We don't have any sales tax here, that's why I never buy from a dealer out of state. but those price aren't terrible either I guess. With what I'd be paying in tax and shipping I'd come out about the same buying brand new from a dealer here. It just blows me away what people get for used machines out here. I will call them for the heck of it and see what they can do, thanks. I do have a friend that comes out here every summer maybe I could get him to haul it out for me. He always brings a trailer when he comes. FF

You should be exempt from MN sales tax: Sales and Transfers

You are getting into the season where things will begin to move, but would "friendly" suggest to remove the personality of the unit, wrap and make it as original as possible to appeal for as many people as possible.

wheelsquad, I'll have to check that out that might be a possibility, I know that Washington does that. I didn't know that other states did that as well. Ill check it out thank you.

alloutdoors, I have had thoughts that the graphics might have something to do with it not selling, the unfortunate thing is the plastics on both of the machines we have were not in very good shape. Horribly scratched, dark black stains all over. At the time I was just not interested in purchasing brand new plastics for either machine, this was the most inexpensive alternative. I'm not sure how easy it will/would be to get this vinyl off of the plastic, it is VERY stuck onto the plastic. Am not sure how bad it could possibly mess up the plastic trying to get it off. As I have been on the trails, or at a trail head loading or unloading, even when I've been in the front yard cleaning them after a ride had very positive comments on the looks of the graphic kits. I know it may not appeal to everyone but don't know if I want to try to remove it and make it look worse than leaving it on. I do take your suggestion as a friendly one because the thought has crossed my mind as well. Thank you. We have a friend that is an auctioneer and he has an auction coming up he said that atv's always sell, and at a price higher than normal, he has one coming up so I may give that a try. Who knows.

as far as sales taxes ?, each state has it's own laws, some states don't have sales tax ?, some do. case in point, when i purchased my 2015 jet ski from MO ?, they did not charge me sales tax there, but !, i had to pay sales tax to register it back here in Arkansas in order to put it on the lake..lol. same goes for a motorcycle, car, truck, camper, anything that requires tags and insurance ?, will need to have sales tax paid in Arkansas. for your state ?, i don't not know ?, but i know the law very well for Arkansas :).

Well,
Probably going to get a lot of crap for the deal I'm going to make in about 7 days. Have been looking at Craigslist virtually everyday since I started this post, have looked at machines as far as 500 miles away. I've had family going and looking at machines for me in eastern Wyoming, North Central Wyoming, South West Idaho and have been calling on machines all over Western Montana and Eastern Washington. I came across a machine in Boise and thought that I had misread the ad. My wife and I have been looking for a machine that #1 has Independent rear suspension, #2 Power steering, #3 Automatic transmission. Mainly for when she rides it will be easier for her to handle and it won't be so exhausting for her at the end of a long day. I came across a 2018, and before you chasten me too harshly and start throwing the hate comments and loser emoticons at me, It really was a deal that I couldn't pass up. Anyway it is a 2018 Can Am 570 Outlander DPS and only 49 miles, still has the Warranty so I can add on additional months up to 36 months. His wife is forcing him to get rid of it because he bought a new ski boat. Picked it up for $5800 he's throwing in a brand new set of $200 loading ramps as well. On top of all that he is a regional sales rep for an AG company and he covers Southern Idaho and all of Montana so he is going to deliver it to me in a week. And......it looks like I might have sold my Rancher. So I'm going to brace myself now for the comments. The way my wife rides it should be a decent machine for her, it won't be mistreated in any way. I'll post some pics of what it looks like and more of when I actually get it. I haven't actually given him the $$$ yet so if I find out anything between now and the day he's going to bring it I can still back out.
