Hi guys. I’ve read a lot of posts on here and other websites about the shifting issues with ES models.
Many seem to have been lucky enough to find that it was simply the reduction gears or the shift angle sensor but I have read some that have had the same problem that I have and have either never found the answer or have never posted up what the answer was.
My problem seems to be very inconsistent but generally it can work fine and then for no reason will not shift and shows the — on the dash. Sometimes I can switch it off and then back on again and shift up or down to get a proper gear. Other times I have to use the lever on the shift spindle. Sometimes I can manually shift 1 to 3 in ESP mode but then if I stop and put it in auto so that I have the D on the dash it will only pull away in first and will not upshift. Quite bizarrely if I put it in four-wheel-drive it will shift perfectly for an hour or two of farm work but can then still revert to — .
I have replaced the shift motor and the angle sensor and have checked all connectors and wiring . The only code I occasionally get is a 23.
If when it is working perfectly in four-wheel-drive or then switch it to 2 wheel drive it is game over.
If you are one of the people that has had this precise problem and have fixed it please share the love ?

You said auto mode and D on the dash, so this is actually an AT model with DCT tranny and not the basic ES, correct? Same principles apply with the shift motor and angle sensor, but this is still worth clarifying because the AT's have extra complications compared to the basic ES models.

if memory is decent ? ( that dont say much ! ) code 23 is a bad angle sensor ?, or a malfunction of the sensor because of a failed shift attempt ?.

Yes this is indeed to TRX420FA1 AT model
I don't have anything specific to look into cause you've already done the main things to start with. But in researching your issue, include 2015+ Rubicon in your search since your DCT and motor are basically identical, besides displacement and subtransmission.
