My manager just bought one of these this evening with 4th gear blown out.
What we know so far is that it started slipping 4th gear and making a noise that accompanies a gear slipping, the guy stopped using it and stuck it on eBay.

So, I know from brief searches that this was common on early ranchers And that the issue was selector and/or gear (M4?)
Anyone had experience with these and said issue? Tips and advice on how to fix?
Also, I’ll be sourcing the parts from the USA as it will be a LOT cheaper, what are my options, OEM, Partzilla?

Thanks in advance folks.

motor has to come out, split. count on more than just 4th gear bad. i'd almost bet your gonna need a few more parts right there to get it back running. you will need a complete engine gasket kit.

I hear the gear cluster comes out without splitting, I don’t know yet that’s just heresay. Going to collect this 420 today so I’ll update later on.
he’s had a cracking deal on price so even if it needs more than a one gear he’s well within it on his budget

First thoughts on parts is PSN , I see they sell the trans shaft stack as a package ----but you say there was a problem with 4th gear , so maybe the newer gears have been updated and a used set would be right back where it started ------all speculation at this point , until it is taken apart and see whats going on it there ------ if gears broke and pieces are inside the case then a split job is going to be in the future

That’s a good thought actually, it may be cheaper and easier to fit the shaft complete. Used or new isn’t really an issue, he’s bought this as a fixer upper, he’ll use it for a month or so then sell it on for a profit I’d have thought.

Yeah sometimes you got to wait a while haven’t you, I’ll check daily and see what comes in. We’re collecting the 420 today so will have a better idea of what needs to be done in the next few days.
I’ll try and do a step my step thing on here once we dig into it as I couldn’t find much on doing this job and seems to be quite a frequent thing with ranchers, especially the earlier ones.

Only managed one snap as it was getting dark and we had a long way to travel. Haven’t had chance to look properly but all other gears work great including 5th, 4th is like dragging a hammer up a wash board though!

So the boss has been working on this all day, cussing away in the background haha..
He’s stripped it pretty much down to the frame and got the engine out on the bench. We heard that the gear cluster would come out by taking the side/back case off, what we heard was wrong of course, usually is isn’t it! Lol.

Nice to work on a newer machine where every bit and blot came off easily, not sheared bolts or rusted threads etc. Made life so easy.

Engine is currently on the bench while we study the FSM, I’ll update in due course and snap some pics of disassembly in the hopes this thread will help folk in the future.

no way around it, motor has to be split in order to replacing bad parts, no short cuts here, someone does not know what they are talking about, I've yet too see a honda atv where you could pull rear cover off, and yank tranny ?!..lol. I wish it was this simple !!!.

my guess is dogs on 4th gear are worn down, allowing it to "skip". Similar to the first gear problem on 05-08 Foremans.

Split cases, pull transmission, inspect and replace worn parts.
rings a bell huh ?!..lol.
I knew it was coming, ‘I told you so’ haha
I bet I won't make that mistake again !!.lmfaooo.

Got the casing split last night and found out it is a gear that has worn however, I could only find the 2014 FSM and this Rancher is 2015. The two gears that mesh are both 33T the FSM only shows one 33T and shows the gear the meshes to it is a 28T.
We’re assuming there are differences between 2014 and 2015, don’t really know yet. We shall loosely assemble and take photos to take to the Honda dealership later on today hoping they know the differences and can supply us with the correct gears.

A picture of the two gears, the lower believed to be M4 (4th)

Edit: These gears (between the two) have castellations, four square lugs, the edges on both gears have rounded over time through abuse, I’ll ad a photo of this for future reference.
