When I first turn the key on it shows what gear it's in which is N. When I actually start it up, it has a minus sign in the panel for about 2 or 3 seconds and then shows the N. It didn't used to do this. What could be causing this?

The engine will also idle pretty high during this same time period and then idle normal. It only has about 400 miles and a 100 hrs on it. Thanks.

There must be a fault indication showing by means of flashing lights on the dash panel. Take another look.
Get yourself a copy of the factory service manual and look up fault diagnosis
