Ive got a '14 rancher 420 im lookin at getting. It sat in storage for a little over a year. Had a problem with it running. Replaced fuel pump. Brand new complet fuel pump. Then got code 23, which is o2 sensor. Replaced that. Now when i run it, as soon as it gets warm it wants to shut down, well kinda like a limp mode. The cooling fan doesnt come on either. Checked all wiring. Nothing chewed up. Replaced temp sensor and still same result. Any help would be appreciated. Oil level is fine and it has brand new non ethenol fuel in it

when it gets hot the radiator starts to steam and the block starts getting hot also. Seems to me that the thermstat would be working if the radiator cap. Than comes on if i unplug the temp sensor. Plus the temp guage wont go past 2 bars outta six but radiator is getting way to hot to not be activating the fan. Ive looked for a fan relay amd cant find one. Even the service manual doesnt show one. I do have one wire coming from the fan that im unable to locate though. Guess im jus gonna have to unravel the tape and loom off the harness to trace it.

There are options to jump/by-pass the fan to ensure it is not working and you can find that online. Do know, I have own many Honda ATVs' to "NEVER" hear the fan go off, so it is rare to hear them run/kick-on.

check all your fuses !!. if fuses are good ( make sure you use a 12vdc test light to test both sides of the fuses while they are installed ! ). just because it lights up when you probe one side ?, DOES NOT MEAN ITS WORKING THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FUSE !. look for the fan fuse to start with. if fuse is good ?, unplug the temp sensor, turn key on, ground the temp sensor right to a good clean ground spot on the motor, when you do this, the fan should kick on ?, if not ?, try hooking 12 volts straight to the fan, if it does not kick on when doing this ?, then i'd say your fan is bad :).

If i unplug the temp sensor the fan kicks on. Ive yet to find a fan relay or a fan fuse. Even in the service manual. Im starting to lean towards the pcm/ecm. Which is about $158. Smdh. Also this is a liquid cooled unit. My oil cooled unit very rarely kicks the fan on. I literally have to be workin it hard. The 420 when it starts gettin hot the radiator starts to steam. I have traced the wires for the temp sensor to the pcm/ecm. Jus at my wits end with this thing

Have you tried running it without the thermostat? But from what your saying your temp sensor might be bad.

I doubt that your pcm is bad, I think the problem lies elsewhere.....

Next question, is your water pump working? Do you see fluid movement in the rad top when the bike is idling

One more question, how dirty is your quad, and is your rad covered in mud?

Your not riding hard enough.....lol

My fan comes on both when its working and if I shut it off hot, it will kick on when I turn the key on with the engine not running...

Radiator is clean. I can see thru 95% of the fins. I havent pulled the cap but when it starts to get hot the radiator starts steaming and i have no coolant loss. So i would have to say the pump is working. Pretty sure radiator wouldnt steam if pump wasnt workin. But will dbl check tomorrow for shits and giggles

You have an airlock in the system then.

You got me to thinking about my machines and would say as the years went on the frequency for the fan kicking on has increased significantly. That is, my early fuel injected 2007/2008 models it was rare to hear to hear the fan kick on and I actually jumped the fan to ensure it was working. However over the years 2010, 2014 and now my new Foreman the frequency of hearing the fan coming on has increased overtime. I suspect the fuel mapping tuning to meet EPA has contributed to this making them burn hotter, but unsure....

Maybe the newer models have a lower temperature setting for when the fan kicks on and off ??? cause now that you say that , I notice the newer bikes that ride with us , their fans do seem to stay on longer after we stop ------ another thing we have noticed that the Yamaha 700 doesn't like to ride slow , it is almost like it needs to go faster for the air to flow over the engine ???? as he will boil over going slow

I have thought all along there was some creep up in frequency over the years with my newer Honda ATVs. A reasonable and consistent variable has been myself, style of riding, years of use over various conditions with all my former units, same trails, etc., , and about a month ago surprised by new Foreman while riding at Land Between the Land (LBL). I was riding in 60 degree weather at LBL and noticed the fan kicked up a number of times which actually surprised me, because it rarely kicked on with my former Ranchers on the same trails and similar conditions. In fact, my first Rancher and believe it was a 2008 I only recall the fan kicking on once..

I have owned various Polaris Rangers and will say the fan kicks on constantly.

I'm running on cold temps here so far, I cant say what my new rubi will do in the summer heat, but when I was working my bike pulling a trail drag with weight it was -20 C to -5C the fan would kick on after a bit of hard pullin but wouldn't stay on all the time. I'll see what this spring and summer brings...

You said you aren't losing coolant but then said you haven't taken the cap off. Also you don't get steam without moisture. You must have washed it or it got wet and moisture is still in the fins or you do have a coolant leak.
All that confusion set aside if your temp light didn't come on then your bike didn't know to shut itself down due to temperature. If you unplug the fan at the sensor and it comes on then that checks out.
When you say brand new fuel pump did you then ride it in mud water afterwards and now it's doing this? If so then it might not be in new condition anymore.
Did you clean the injector on the throttle body?
Did you get rid of your old gas and put new in?
Have you checked that the gas cap vent and fuel pump vent is not clogged?
Most times if your bike acts like it's running out of gas .... it probably is.
