I bought the rancher used with 11 miles on it from an old lady with a hobby farm . I only use the ATV for ice fishing and snow removal . I have 290 miles on it and while pushing snow after a while the the reverse and first gear get a work out and I start having contact shifting problems or a stalled shift with a pretty good clunk when the gear shifts .

It works but maybe I need the clutch adjusted ? Maybe I should have the valves adjusted also for regular maintenance . It would be the first time having either adjusted . I called the local honda dealer an hour away and made the appointment . I get there and the guy says it sounds fine and most likely the valves will not be adjusted .We will look at the clutch adjustment but says it is shifting fine also .

It runs great it is just moving snow after a while the shifting gets crappy . I come back and he now tells me the clutch can not be adjusted on this model and the valves are fine .We have the same rancher out back and have 17,000 miles on it and just adjusted the valves .

He says we hooked up the PC reader...Ok what for ? Found a one time code popped the plug greased it retested ok and greased the shift gear . You were a quart low on oil that will be $107.00 . They over filled my oil over a half of a quart and put some grease on a gear for over $100.00 ? Is this normal shop service ? I do not think I will be going back .

It is an AT trx420fad ES/AUTO IRS .
Oh oops, yeah you put that right in the title.

I'm sure some other DCT owners will be along to advise. But yeah I'm pretty sure with the DCT neither shift clutch pack has any adjustment, but someone else will come along to confirm. Service manual would also clearly state it too.

Did it act the same way shifting after you got it back? I'd doubt they even did anything. Best thing you can do for your shift motor is to follow along here: https://www.hondaatvforums.net/foru...y/117193-creamsicle-orange-5.html#post1151201

Use the grease he specified and not the pasty stuff honda says to use. You'll understand the shift motor system much more after doing this.

Sounds pretty typical for a stealership experience, that's half the reason why this forum exists.

They charge $350.00 to do an electrical diagnose problem and this ATV is all wires and electrical parts . Is there a reader I can buy to diagnose my own electrical problems ? It has to work with DTC and not be a Chinese knock off . If I did not need this ATV for snow and ice fishing I would get rid of it . I live in a small town and this dealer is the nearest shop with in two hours round trip . Now I have to try a new shop three hour round trip if I ever need to that is .

My 2006 rancher lasted 10 years with only needing a starter . Then the shift motor went out and the dealer same building diff dealer stripped my shift motor bolts and the ATV never did work right again . Then the shop closed leaving me with a bunk ATV .These new people seem to be about as knowledgeable with Hondas as the last . They could have told me there is no clutch adjustment and we wont adjust the valves unless they are rattling like crazy . Then to have the trained tech over fill my oil drive my ATV three miles and do basically nothing for over $100 and then choke up we did nothing to your valves and no clutch adjustment . I asked how much to get out of here ? He went in the next room and very quietly talked to the big guy and readjusted my bill to $107.77 so it was more than that for nothing . Sorry for the rant , I still have that bad taste in my mouth .
