Searched posts and couldn't find anything real similar to what's happening. Bike starts and runs and shifts great. Problem I have is anytime I run in 5th gear for any amount of time, the gear indicator goes blank and will not downshift. If I just stop and key off and back on, it shifts fine up and down again untill I run 5th again.( Maybe a mile or so). My 2010 rancher and 2012 recon both have way more miles and neither have had this problem. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Deek

Does everything else display right on the meter? Speed? Are there any codes stored? Does the gear indicator go completely dark or does it begin to flash? Do you have a copy of the service manual yet?

Read section 24 of the manual... and unplug and clean, then dielectric grease the gear position switch harness connector. Then test the gear position switch. Of course, if there are any codes stored follow that trail too. Regardless, you'll need a service manual once you get past cleaning the gear position switch connector.

Thanks for replying. Yes , everything else displays properly, it may flash when it first does it, I'm not sure. I'm usually riding down a country road and really don't notice its done it until I need to turn or stop. It doesn't slow down or come out of 5th gear. That's the only time it does it, I can ride trails all day long and it won't do it. No I do not have a service manual, is there a downloadable version?

See if you can find a copy linked in the 1st thread in the manuals forum. The 2014 manual should be about the same as 2013, as far as the ES system goes.

It sounds like a gear position switch or connector plug issue. You will need a decent multimeter to test the switch. If it is an intermittent problem that switch might test good but still be bad. There could be a loose battery or frame ground, or a wire rubbed through against the frame or chewed by mice just as likely... the display meter should be tested for serial line, data line and power/ground line faults as well.

I'd be thorough in the diagnosis before buying anything, cause it may not need any parts to fix it. The most common cause of all electrical issues are dirty/wet/corroded harness plug connectors and/or poor frame grounds.

Let us know how it goes if you can.
