Hello everyone, so I recently purchased a 2007 rancher 420, which I love so far. And I have the opportunity to purchase a 2013 rancher 420 as well. The story behind the 2013 rancher, it was sunk in 2014, then brought to Honda dealer to fix. The bill was $3600. It ran fine and then sat for about a year and half since the owner purchased a side by side then. When it was started again after it sat, it started making an engine noise. Not exactly loud knocking. I have attached a video. We agreed on price of $1200. Is this something I should go through with? Anyone can tell what could possibly be wrong? Thank youhttps://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5a79ae7ce76f9/received_10210792174496289.mp4

Unless you are prepared, personally or professionally to dive into that engine and absorb the cost, then I would walk or if you are looking for a possible project/great parts ATV then buy it; that is, the engine will likely let go and you will have a ton of parts for the 2007 or do an engine swap.

I understand. I'm still fairly new to ATVs. So best to just pass? I just figured it was a good deal and he mentioned Honda dealer has repaired it after it was sunk and it was running great afterwards until he let it sit.

On this website, we discuss sunk ATVs reasonably often and in general, the only way to address it correctly is completely split/clean, etc., the entire engine, so the silt/sand/grit are all removed. In the event this is not done properly and then run it with some silt/sand/grit it will eat bearings, etc., and you have what you have there, a knocking ATV needing a massive overhaul. Again, the price is great if you have the ability and time to fix, but if not, then I would let one of these master mechanics here on this site pick it up and bring it back to its fully glory.....

My first instinct was "shop didn't fix it right" but after listening to the video (and keep in mind noises normally don't convey well in videos) that sounds like it could simply need valves adjusted or maybe got a bad bore on the top end.

Does the guy have receipts on the work done by the dealership? Was the engine torn all the way down and cleaned out? Crank replaced?

He is about to email me the invoice and receipt. I will upload it here afterwards. It sounded like valves needed readjusting to me as well. But of course can't tell just by video.

I see one thing that stands out.

FLUSH.

Which says engine was not torn down, and there is a very good possibility that there is still grit in the bottom end that will have to be addressed.

If you're looking for something to ride, pass on it.

It could be a great deal if you buy it with the understanding that it might need an engine rebuild, and are willing to do the work yourself IF it needs it.

It might be fine for years just like it is.

It's a gamble though. At $1200, honestly it's priced as a gamble. You could probably recoup half of that parting it out if the engine goes south.

There's a 4 part video on youtube showing a rebuild on that motor. Not terribly hard, and if you are at all interested in learning, pick it up.

Again, it comes down to relative risk and willingness to potentially lose some money or dive into the engine. Personally, I would walk, save up some dollars and look for another ATV. Whomever this person is knows, selling this unit isn't trivial given the history and priced accordingly....

I completely understand. It was originally 2000 asking price and I got him down to 1200. He said he would take 1000 if I decided to return and purchase. I test drove it, it still runs great and strong. Not sure if exact model but his had IRS, auto and esp mode. I don't even notice the noise when driving it. I think it may actually be the valves. Oil was clean. Not going to lie, he used for mudding. It had an hmf exhaust, tune, 2 inch lift, 28 inch swamplites tires, 2500lb winch, relocated radiator, LED bar and snorkel. The suspension (shock bodies, axles, etc) were rusted, but still in working order. He had a broken front caliper but was going to include New one. I am really thinking about it. Anyone can give me an estimate to restore it back to good shape? I was trying to figure a cost out, if I got new plastics, did full tune up, cleaned it up, etc. I don't see myself print out more than about 500? Thank you.

No no no no This guy is telling you a bald face lie!!! It wasn't rebuilt then sat. It was rebuilt then sunk again and is knocking and needs a new rod.

Heres how I know ... well because I buy these all the time so I know ALL the lies ... but also on your invoice the clutch spacer on the engine was replaced to fix the the stripped oil drain plug which means that section of the engine would still be shiney aluminum and it's not. It's the color of mud stain like the rest of the engine is from being abused and sunk.

I do pay$1200- $1000 for these bike with a bad crank but literally nothing else can be wrong with it and the plastics with no snorkel hole and upgraded wheels here in Louisiana.

This bike is an automatic which is tough to learn how to disassemble for a first timer but there are folks here to help you out I'm sure if you get stuck but know a total engine tear down is needed along with a topend rebuild plus timing chain and oneway bearing.... about $700-$800 just in parts to fix the engine alone and you haven't repaired any axles or diffs yet if needed.

I've attached a pic of the engine part that was replaced and would still look new if it weren't sunk again.
... by any chance IS this a Louisiana bike? Lol this story is all too familiar and the mud stain color of that engine haunts me lmao folks out KILL these machines and I buy em destroyed like twice a month (except I don't do automatics)
..... also make sure the dude has a title on it.

I'll have a good look again. He lives close to my house. He has a title. And yes I do live in Louisiana. I have a buddy who is supposed to go with me Thursday and he will give me the go or not to buy it. Since he knows about ATVs and fixes them up as well.

I KNEW IT!!! That engine has a mud stain color with Tower Traxx written all over it!
Dude is totally lying but don't sweat it happens all the time. That engine is knocking bad and when you correct the crank the topend will also need changed or it will smoke like a train.

We'll help with the engine but if y'all scrap it you can recoup most of your money parting it out. Guys in Louisiana pay $500 for the rear IRS setup alone.
Have your buddy make sure it changes thru all 5 gears using automatic and electric shift and that reverse and 4x4 work.
Give that rear diff a hard look because that's also an expensive rebuild.
Check all wheel bearings, axles and bushings. Those bushings can add up on an IRS.
Also check for oil leaks to make note of any seals that'll need replacing while you rebuild the engine.
Lastly check that oil plug underneath and make sure its factory and not some stripped out rig or leaking. The invoice says it was replaced but that could also be an invoice for a different bike!
It's a lot of work but at least you'll have a rebuild that you did and can trust.

Yeah that's cheap for a running IRS bike.

I paid $500 for my wife's 09 just like it. No wheels and tires, no front bumper, rodded out muffler, and it ran but smoked like a freight train.

I stripped it down to the frame, rebuilt the engine (new crank, 500 Foreman top end), cleaned the spray paint off the fenders, and it turned out well. I had quite a bit of time and money in it by the time I was done, but it's a good bike.

For $1K if it's running, not smoking, and is all there with a title, I'd get it. You could part it out and get your money out of it if/when the engine goes South.

The IRS rear ends are in demand. That alone, as Carolynskii said, is worth half the purchase price.

Carolynskii....only 3 posts but I recognize that username. Where have I seen it?
