Well the first oil change was 50% successful. It turns out that the 2010 TRX420s have two different oil filters. According to the local bike shop, the automatics (TRX420FA & TRX420FPA) use oil filter part number 15412-HP7-A01. The other models use 15412-HM5-A10 which is about an inch smaller all around, and the one I had with me this weekend.

So imagine my dismay as I drained all the oil, popped the oil filter out and realized I had the wrong one. Keep in mind the Rancher is stored at the in-laws cabin, 300 miles away in the high country. Well I wasn't going to not ride this weekend so I used the old filter and the new oil. Note to everyone: plan on changing the oil after the weekend is over!

Anyway I have the right filter now and will give it another go. This is just for the first 100 mi maintenance!

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anyone buying the wrong filter! Someone else can verify these findings.

yeah, the 15412-hp7-a01 crosses to a fram CH6015, which is NOT CORRECT!!! the fram part is probably for the other smaller filter (15412-hm5-a10) Beware!!! I thought I lucked out finding a cross in stock when my local dealer was out of the OEM.

I ran into the same problem yesterday with 09 rancher.

Had the old filter out and opened the new box to find the filter was too small.
Both the auto parts store and local cycle shop wanted to give me the wrong one.
Cycle shop said it could only be one other one he had in stock so he came through with the correct filter although it did not come with a new gasket..... Man I hate that!
Luckily my old gasket did not have flat corners from being on there forever but I am the third owner and I know neither p/o changed any of the fluids.
