Hello, I have a 2009 rancher 420 fpe (ES and power steering model) with shifting problems. It does not shift at all and the gear indicator will flash the gear it’s in over and over again. Occasionally it’ll try to shift but it’s very weak and doesn’t shift (I can hear it) and this only happens right after turning the ignition on (motor off). I can still drive it fine if I manually change the gear using the emergency shifter tool. So I’m not sure what it could be? if I could guess the battery should be all good so idk? I’m thinking it’s the shift motor that’s broken or something. Or it could be as simple as the angle sensor but I can’t tell.

The ES bikes rarely ever need any new parts put on them if they are prepped in time... before excessive friction fries the ECM while its trying to power that little shift motor through all of the problems Honda created.

Update us when you get done if you can.

Thank you for the help, it was a dirty connector/wire. My next step will be cleaning out all other connectors and adding some dielectric grease to prevent future problems. Also adding some better grease to the shift motor gears.

Follow the steps I showed ya when you get time to tear it down. In particular, straighten up any reduction gear support bearings that aren't installed straight and repack everyone of those bearings with NLGI #2 synthetic grease. Use the same grease on every part, coat the gears and housing liberally with it. If you are gonna be in water/mud with the bike you'll need to tear the shift motor down again for cleaning, so you can seal the motor up using a thin film of RTV gasket maker on the seal, rather than o-ring grease or other... same goes for the reduction gears cover. Water WILL get inside them if you don't.

Have fun on your upcoming ride!
