Hello folks!

I'm brand new here and am going to look at a 2008 model Rancher AT. I decided I'd do a little research on it and come to find out there no mention of it anywhere. There's all kind of articles about the 09 AT and earlier 400 AT's.

I verified by pictures that it is a solid rear axle, so it can't be an 09. I asked the seller specifically and he claims that you can switch between manual shift and auto shift.

Does anyone know if the 2008 420's had an 'AT' model preceding the IRS 2009?

2009 is the first production year for the Rancher 420 AT.

The add is gone. That site I linked above doesn't specifically have an 08 AT, but if it's not IRS then it's not an 09, obviously. He may have bought it in 08 and been told it was an 08, but have gotten an 07. The model number will tell you. It will be TRX420fpa if it's an 08 auto.

The old autos were the hondamatic CVT transmission. I guess they might have a manual shift function that just moves from different 'programmed' speed settings, but there really aren't specific discrete gears. The new AT uses a clutched 5 speed transmission, not a CVT.

It's hard to tell, but I thought the 08 had a single taillight in the center. Those photos look like it has a tail light on the left side. Not sure what the 07 model had.

Thats not a rancher 420 AT. Unless its an add typo, then I would say that is a scam. Pictures don't match to discription.

That looks like a 400AT. That's not a 420.

Thanks guys, you're right. It's an 07 400 AT. (TRX400FH)

I don't think it was a scam as the seller refunded my pay pal deposit.

Any leads on a nice 420 Rancher in the northern Minnesota?

I believe they started making the 420 Rancher in 2007, in manual shift and electric shift and in 2009, they started offering the 420 Rancher in auto (AT) in the US.

I believe the 400AT (TRX400FA) was sold from 2004-2007 in the US.

Note that those years are for ATVs sold in the US, Canadian models could differ.

Hard to say for sure, he may have given me the wrong numbers. At any rate, it is a 400 and not a 420. I really wanted the 420 so I passed on this and am looking further.

Yeah, all those letter combinations can get confusing. The "FA" stands for 4wd auto. "FGA" stands for 4wd auto with GPS.
