Anyone know what might cause this? It will fire right up in neutral but not when it’s in gear, hold the brake and it just cranks and cranks.

Its probably a poor connection somewhere. You might try cleaning and dielectric greasing all of the plugs on the bike. Check fuses & diodes too, for good, clean connections in their sockets.
