The Quad started to be hard to get into nuetral. Now sometimes it will shift thru all the gears and then again it will not. Also a few times it has went to 2 from 3rd on its own.

Just wondering if this is a clutch issue and if so how to adjust it.

I am new to the trx so all help is needed and apprieciated

Welcome to the forums.... It is a clutch adjustment issue but I can't remember exactly how to adjust it it's been a while but I think you loosen the jam nut and turn the allen head center screw in until it starts to feel tight then back it out 1/4 turn and tighten the jam nut. this is located on the right side case the foot brake side. if that isn't correct I know you will have help by the end of the day.

Moose is right. That is how you ajust the free play for a Honda. Also have you had the cover off of the clutch for any reason? If you have you might have it out of time. They have to be put back together right.

Moose was right, except he got the direction you turn it wrong. It's just the opposite. You loosen the locknut and turn the screw counterclockwise slowly until you feel resistance, then turn it clockwise 1/4 turn. Now, hold the screw and tight down the locknut.

I no this may sound elementary but where exactly is the locknut and screw located. I do not want to cause any other problems
It will be located on the clutch side cover. I don't have a picture of the TRX90, but here is one of the Fourtrax 300. It should look something like this.

Ok, I know this is an old thread but i am working on this engine for a friend of mine. He is having the same problem. He already pulled the motor and dropped it off to me. I will try adjusting the jam nut like mentioned but I already pulled the clutch cover to take a look. Submairne, what do you mean the timing can be off if i remove the cover??? How does that get affected and how to I put it together right??

Quadracer041<<Welcome to da forums...:icon_ devil: If the internal shafts, and gears n such are not 100% aligned properly when you go to reinstall the side cover, the clutch may not work,or the cover may not go all the way back on which is usually the case...Go download this manual.. 1993-2005 TRX90 Service Manual.pdf hondaatvforums.net is the password if prompted for one, search for clutch, see pics about the clutch side cover, and alignment...

Ok, I adjust the clutch the way described via the jamb nut. Gave it back to my friend, he reinstalled the engine and it still has an issue. I now have the quad, it seems to upshift just fine. But doesn't want to down shift, you have to keep trying and trying then after a while it will come down. It seems like if im stopped and click the shifter up slightly you can hear it click into another gear then it will start to down shift. It sometimes feels like it will hit a false nutreal. What should I look for?

Re adjust the clutch again...There's a video on clutch adjustments in the repair and maintenance section on the main forums page,it is like the 6th,or 7th sticky in there...If you get it all adjusted properly, and it still has shifting issues, then you may have a bad spring inside the cover on the shift shaft, a worn shift drum,or guide plates...

Thats how I did my adjustment. I took the side cover off and removed the clutch and basket and the centrifical clutch assembly. It looks like the part of the shifter spindle that ratchets the dowel pins is not locking onto them and grabbing them. does that make sense?
