Hello...My ATV listed in the title has an issue when it gets hot. This happens mostly when I am going through heavy snow or plowing snow. Under normal operations it has been fine. After plowing for a while, it seems the transmission is slipping and it will not move...just whine. Any ideas what it could be? I asked a Honda dealer and they had no clue.

That sounds pretty serious! The motor and AT trans can be ruined by overheating the oil.

I would check whether your cooling fan may not be working when the oil gets hot? You can diagnose the fan motor, the oil temp sensor and control by following the testing procedures in the service manual. You can find a copy HERE.

Once your oil is seriously overheated it is junk... I would change the oil & filter immediately if that has happened... and it sounds like it has.

I smoked my centrifugal clutch once after it got too hot from the oil temp sensor going bad and therefore not telling the fan to kick on, on a hot day.

Our 400AT's are hard on oil. After replacing the clutch mine ha held up well running Rotella T6 with 5% Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer, checking the level often, and installing a manual switch to control the fan. Also, don't run tires bigger than 24's.
