I’ve checked the valves 3 times and and they are good. it sounds like the valves but can’t tell where the sound is coming from.its quite when cold then when it worms up it ticks/chatter when warm.when I rev the motor it’s very loud. How hard is it to replace the chain? Could it be the lifters?

Its probably a valve seat that has loosened in the head and is falling out (follows the valve when it opens) once the casting warms up. This is a common occurance on 350 Rancher heads. The valve seats are interference fit in the aluminum casting at the factory... not a cast in place fit. If that is your issue the head will have to be replaced to fix it. Let us know what you learn..,

Forgot to add head is new and I just checked it. I’m thinking caps now.i pulled the plug at the bottom of the atv where you check tdc and it sounded quiet when I ran it a sec.

One more thing to add it has plenty or power.no loss.it runs perfect just a very loud tick and when you hit the gas it gets louder.

Exhaust leak then, probably at the head where the header pipe crushes a copper gasket. Might have gotten it off-center... or is loose, or the flange dented... check it out.

No it’s new.i believe it’s the cam follow.im tearing it down again in a few hours.it sounds like metal tapping metal.

Ok so I pulled the flywheel cover and I got a screwdriver and found a good bit of play in the chain.i could move the chain easly.their is suppose to be no play at all correct?

Might as well replace it. A new one is $20. If it doesn't fix it at least you know you have a new timing chain. LOL

Did you set the TDC on the compression stroke before adjusting the valves?

Once I set the TDC on the exhaust stroke and got a loud noise when I started the Rancher. It ran well just loud and I knew right away something was wrong. Learned from my mistake.

I am having a similar issue and I'm interested to know what you find. How difficult was it to check the cam chain? Did you do it with the engine in the frame.
