Welcome to the forums. Anytime you hear a ticking noise in the top of the engine is a good time to check the valve clearance, but the maintenance schedule says to do the initial check at 20 hours and then after that, every 100 hours. Valves can tighten up and make the engine hard to start, so if you notice the engine is getting harder to start, that's also a good time to check them. Here is the procedure.
